AmeriCorps Aquatics/Swimming Coach with the Greater Philadelphia YMCA Job at Up2Us Sports
The Greater Philadelphia YMCA (Camden, NJ) is seeking part-time coaches for its after-school and summer aquatics/swimming programs, which teach elementary- and middle-school-aged children healthy habits and critical life skills through water sports. Coaches will lead 45-90 minute sessions 3-5 days/week during the school year and more concentrated programming during the summer. Responsibilities include:
- Cultivating, monitoring, and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for children to learn and develop aquatics/swimming skills
- Mentoring youth about life skills, the benefits of physical activity and nutrition, and sportspersonship; fostering a non-competitive atmosphere in which these goals are prioritized
- Acting as a role model, developing rapport with and gaining the trust of youth served, their communities, and YMCA administrators
- Setting up and breaking down practice equipment (including for virtual sessions, when necessary), teaching water sport activities and skills, and supervising players
- Completing Up2Us Sports’ sports-based youth development training curriculum
- Performing data collection activities
- Completing bi-weekly timesheets
- Attending mandatory staff meetings, days of community service, and end of season celebrations
- Completing all AmeriCorps service requirements
- Maintaining positive relationships with colleagues, youth, families, and other community members and stakeholders who may interact with the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, Up2Us Sports, and/or AmeriCorps
Essential Qualifications:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Hold U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident status
- Be able to pass mandatory background checks
- Be a proficient swimmer, capable of swimming the breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and freestyle for a minimum of 500 yards
- Have experience coaching or teaching diverse groups of children
- Have regular access to reliable transportation to and from the Camden YMCA
Commitment and Compensation:
This is an AmeriCorps service position with Up2Us Sports. Applicants will learn more about the commitment, compensation, and relationship between the Greater Philadelphia YMCA, AmeriCorps, and Up2Us Sports during an initial phone screen interview. However, coaches will generally be expected to work an average of 15-20 hours/week, accumulating a minimum of 900 hours over the course of a one-year AmeriCorps service term.
All Up2Us AmeriCorps coaches receive an annual living allowance (stipend), paid bi-weekly. Coaches who complete their AmeriCorps service requirements will receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award, which can be used to repay qualified student loans or cover current educational expenses. Compensation for this part-time position is: $9,000 stipend / $3,247.50 education award. Coaches may be eligible for additional compensation and benefits.
