ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Assistant Chief Fiscal Office, the Accountant I is responsible for preparing and completing fiscal reporting requirements for the Health and Human Services Department’s Social Services programs including, but not limited to, Area Agency on Aging, Veterans, and Public Guardian. The Accountant I prepares, reviews, and monitors all accounting and financial transactions, budgets, revenue, expenditures, and fund balances. They maintain and reconcile records and prepares revenue and expenditure reports for specialized grant programs. The Accountant I contributes to the development, modification, and implementation of financial record keeping and reporting systems. They prepare financial reports and claims for payment required for State and Federal funding and make sure they are clear, concise, and accurate. The Accountant I works with auditors and other professionals to supply and validate information on accounting transactions, policies, and procedures. The Accountant I reads, interprets, and explains Federal and State rules, regulations, and other legislative guidance to determine financial impacts.

There is currently one (1) full time contingent/temporary Accountant I positions available within the Health and Human Services Department at the County of Marin.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancy and any future vacancies for open, fixed-term, full-time or part-time positions which may occur while the list remains active. Future vacancies could include positions in other County Departments.

Health and Human Services has embraced a hybrid work schedule that considers that some duties of this position may be performed remotely and options to telework up to three days per week and work remaining days onsite are available; however, the successful candidate must be able to report to County facilities for meetings, work assignments, and/or disaster service work upon short notice, as needed and deemed appropriate. While onboarding and training, the successful candidate may be required to work primarily onsite before establishing a hybrid work schedule.

The ideal candidate works well both independently and with a team of accountants and program staff. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator and is organized, dependable, flexible, and accurate. The ideal candidate can solve complex problems, and can read, interpret, and explain program rules and legislation to identify financial impacts. Knowledge of Social Services programs is highly desirable.

Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with at least 12 semester or 18 quarter units in accounting. Additional professional or technical accounting experience may be substituted for the education on a year-for-year basis, provided there is no substitution for the accounting units. Education or experience in using automated accounting systems and spreadsheets is highly desirable.

Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect.
