Position: Accounting Manager
Department: Accounting
Reports To: Director of Accounting
FLSA: Exempt
SUMMARY
Oversees and supervises the operations of the accounting, bookkeeping, accounts payable, and membership records functions and related staff of the Accounting Department, including but not limited to preparation of financial statements according to generally accepted accounting principles and regulatory requirements, financial management, regulatory and tax reporting, and maintenance and forecasting of financial performance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Directly supervises accounting team lead(s) and indirectly supervises all employees in the Accounting Department, including interviewing, selecting, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; evaluating performance; rewarding, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; recommending employees for promotion, transfer, and termination.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manages the staffing and functions of the Accounting Department, including bookkeeping, accounts payable, CD/IRAs, and membership records functions.
- Oversee the monthly reconciliation preparation assigned to the accounting staff and ensure all outstanding balances are address properly; this would include proper backup documentation and GL history.
- Ensures proper staffing levels are maintained within the Accounting Department.
- Addresses Accounting Department employee complaints and issues and resolves problems in a professional manner.
- Responsible for overseeing and evaluating performance of Accounting Department employees.
- Approves, denies, and monitors vacation and sick leave requests for subordinate employees.
- Ensures the accuracy and integrity of the general ledger.
- Regularly reviews entries to the general and statistical ledgers to assure accuracy and compliance with established accounting principles and procedures.
- Prepares and posts general and statistical ledger entries, as needed.
- Responsible for the end-of-period closing entries and general ledger closeout.
- Oversees and assists in the preparation of financial and statistical reports, including the NCUA CALL report.
- Coordinates and prepares for financial audits and examinations as required by credit union policy, government regulations, and other organizations.
- Responsible for the preparation of required tax returns and interactions with various taxing authorities, including the IRS.
- Responsible for Freddie Mac servicer accounting and default reporting.
- Responds to internal and external audits and NCUA examinations and compliance issues related to the Accounting Department and recommends compliance or corrective actions.
- Monitors established internal controls related to the Accounting Department to assure proper compliance.
- Organizes regularly scheduled staff meetings, team building exercises and communicates strategic objectives.
- Responsible for compliance with all Federal regulations including Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists in training new personnel and overseeing the cross-training of Accounting Department staff to maintain backup in all positions.
- Provides accounting/bookkeeping information to management and/or other departments, as needed.
- Assists in researching outages in the general ledger.
- Other duties as may be assigned by management.
QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance from a 4 year college or university required, or equivalent combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the functions of the position.
Experience and Other Requirements:
- Minimum five (5) years prior accounting experience required, preferably in a credit union or financial institution environment, with demonstrated progressive supervisory experience.
- Experience in or knowledge of financial institution products, services, and records preferred.
- Must possess strong working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Experience in or knowledge of banking and finance as related to money management and cash flows required.
- Must possess knowledge of cash management, expenditure, and disbursement processes.
- Must possess knowledge of federal tax guidelines and laws as they relate to employer and non-for-profit organizations.
- Must possess knowledge of data processing capabilities and procedures.
- Must possess excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of employees and outside vendors.
- Strong ability to manage time efficiently by organizing, prioritizing, and delegating required.
- Must possess the ability to effectively coordinate many projects simultaneously with a high degree to accuracy and competency.
- Strong analytical and reasoning skills required.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills required.
- Must possess the ability to establish credibility and make sound judgments.
Computer Skills:
Extensive use of personal PC required, with working knowledge of Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel.
Must be proficient in use of internet and e-mail.
Certificates, Licenses and Registrations:
CPA designation preferred.
