The salary range indicated is the minimum and maximum for the position. Appointment can be made above the minimum depending upon qualifications but is anticipated to be between the minimum and mid-range and no offer will be made beyond mid-range.

The City of Sierra Vista is seeking a youth services librarian with a focus on early literacy, technology, and STEAM programming for elementary students. Will have the responsibility of maintaining a collection. This person will join a dedicated team to provide library services to Sierra Vista residents from birth through the teen years, as well as their parents, caregivers, and educators. The successful candidate will be a dynamic individual who is forward-thinking, creative, adaptable, and who has shown proven results working with youth and developing innovative services that foster library and community collaboration. Under administrative direction, plans, directs, and coordinates the activities of the Library.

Tasks

Work involves analyzing the public's library needs, selecting library material, providing a variety of early literacy and technology programs, advising the public in their use of library materials, and performing outreach in the community. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and accepted library practices and procedures. This position may supervise clerical, paraprofessional level staff, and/or volunteers. Work is performed independently and the position is directly supervised by the library manager.

Knowledges, Skills & Other Characteristics

Knowledge of:

Best practices in programming for young children and teens.

Early literacy practices and principles.

STEAM programming for youth, including, but not limited to technology programming for young children.

Customer service principles and practices with dedicated emphasis towards excellence in service delivery.

Current and emerging models, practices, and tools used by public libraries for the access and discoverability of resources.

Literacy resources, both digital and physical, with proven ability to research, retrieve, evaluate, and utilize.

Electronic resources (such as eBooks, streaming video, e-Audio) and how to download the materials to e-Readers and various mobile devices.

Microsoft Office products and other relevant technologies such as Integrated Library Systems (ILS) software.

Supervisory practices and techniques.

Principles and techniques of children’s and teens reading material selection.

Basic reference tools and services.

Social networking tools.


Ability to:

Innovate to create new youth-oriented programs for the library and off site centers.

Communicate and maintain excellent relationships with both internal and external customers.

Supervise, train and evaluate volunteer, clerical and/or paraprofessional level staff.

Deliver information services via phone, email, or in person.

Recommend and develop online information resources as part of a team.

Perform collection maintenance insuring the scope and quality of the library's collections.

Search standard reference material, including online sources such as computerized databases.

Manage projects by applying critical thinking and analytical problem solving skills.

Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

Demonstrate superior customer service.

Analyze, take ownership and resolve requests and issues using critical thinking skills.

Pro-actively and continually develop and enhance professional skills.

Operate with minimum supervision and work in a team environment to build partnerships, find solutions and make service enhancements.

Have knowledge of social media platforms and demonstrate sufficiency in using them to connect with a diverse body of users.

Analyze community needs and demographics.

Serve in the absence of the Library Manager, if requested.

Qualifications

Master's degree in Library Science required. A valid Arizona Driver's License or the ability to obtain one is required. Two years of experience performing professional library work preferred.

  • Degree must be from an institution accredited as recognized by the U.S Department of Education as indicated in the Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs.

Police and Fire personnel participate in the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System (PSPRS). Mandatory employee contribution rate range is currently 7.65% - 11.65% depending on eligible tier with PSPRS.

All employees are eligible to participate in a voluntary deferred compensation plan.

Vacation Employees earn twelve vacation days per year, available for use after six months, with increases to accrual rates in five-year service increments.

Additional Time Off/Sick Leave Employees earn twelve paid sick days per year for use after one month.

Holidays Employees are provided twelve paid holidays per year.
