POSITION SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision this position will perform repairs, modifications and develop and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule on vineyard equipment, irrigation and frost control systems. Prepares equipment for different vineyard tasks; add, adjust, modify or remove parts in accordance with needs and spot check equipment regularly to ensure all parts are in good, safe, working order.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide day-to-day maintenance for all vineyard equipment and perform hands-on tasks in workshop/vineyard area; and install, maintain and repair a wide range of vineyard equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and perform repair work on all vineyard equipment.
  • Perform regular maintenance on all equipment; oil, oil filter, fuel filter, air filter, plugs, belts and electrical. Check and adjust timing, fluid levels, tire pressure, loose knobs/handles, etc.
  • Creative fabrication of vineyard implements where needed.
  • Fabricates moderately complex systems including, but not limited to, piping systems, small electrical panels, control systems, or equipment to support production needs.
  • Maintain proper inventory of shop tools and supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records for equipment.
  • Develop and maintain a preventative maintenance schedule to ensure all vehicles and equipment receive regular tune-ups and other scheduled maintenance.
  • Set up and prep equipment for various vineyard tasks; safely and correctly hook up all machine cultivation, spray equipment and other tractor attachments prior to use in the vineyard.
  • Maintain irrigation and frost control systems.
  • Service and maintain company vehicles and trucks.
  • Special projects that may include technical engineering, welding and fabrication.
  • General property maintenance: fence repair, equipment cleaning, vineyard cleanup.

Education, Training and Other Requirements:

  • 5+ years experience in agricultural maintenance or equivalent and 1-2 years’ experience in running an agricultural shop. Certified welder preferred.
  • High school graduate diploma or GED required and a Technical School Certification is a plus.
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of farming and vineyard equipment: trucks, trailers, tractors, cultivation equipment, sprayers and misc. small machinery. This includes mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and small engines for both diesel and gas.
  • Ability to operate and drive all vineyard vehicles and equipment including: flatbed truck, forklift, tractor: crawler and wheel based, sprayer, weed eater, rototiller and chainsaw and other vineyard implements.
  • Ability to work on complex projects with general direction and minimal guidance.
  • Ability to understand any and all safety requirements and cautions.
  • Ability to work and communicate with equipment operators and vineyard foremen. Bilingual Spanish speaking skills a plus.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work well with others.
  • Ability to perform basic math required.

  • Good judgment with the ability to make timely and sound decisions.
  • Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and arms to operate tools and equipment; push pull, and grasp objects; climb, crouch, kneel or stoop for extended periods of time.
  • Perform repetitive motions including bending, twisting, stooping, pushing and pulling.
    Must have a valid California Drivers License and maintain an insurable driving record. Class B License is a plus.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime.
