JOB DESCRIPTION/CLASS SPECIFICATION
Title: Town Planner
Department: Administration
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Performs a variety of professional and technical duties related to implementing department work plans and programs and monitoring community compliance with established planning, zoning and development ordinances.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Town Manager.
SUPERVISION EXCERISED:
None
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Examples of duties include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Receives and processes land use applications and renewals, inspects them for completeness, and reviews them for compliance with Land Management Code
- Conducts research on issues, policies, and concepts pertaining to planning, zoning, and community development; presents reports, analysis and findings to the
Planning Commission and/or Town Council; prepares written reports in response to public requests for zoning applications and various ordinance and development code changes
- Prepares proposals in draft form for amendments to development code, zoning ordinance or policy governing local planning, zoning, and development
- Prepares planning commission meeting agendas and staff reports and assures compliance with state and local posting requirements
- Coordinates with Iron County Building Department for proper reviews of commercial and residential plans and specifications to assure compliance with Town zoning ordinances
- Coordinates with builders and developers and assists by identifying actions needed to secure compliance
- Conducts field inspections as needed to assist with project reviews
- Participates in Planning Commission meetings, appeals hearings, and related administrative processes related to project management, code development, etc.
- Attends Town Council or other meetings as needed or requested
- Occasional office coverage for other Town departments
- Other duties as assigned by the Town Administrator

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from college with a bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration or a closely related field;
AND
Three (3) to Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience directly related to the above related duties;
OR
Any equivalent combination of experience and education.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of and experience with:
- Familiarity with and understanding of Utah land use statutes (LUDMA)
- Proficiency in or ability to learn Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping
- Ability to operate a computer and associated software with accuracy.
- Skilled in standard computer applications, such as email, word processing, and spreadsheets.
- Ability to accurately receive, review, and process land use applications.
- Ability to manage time effectively.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, the Mayor, Town Council, and Planning Commission, and other Town employees
- Skilled in dealing with various customers, via telephone, email or in person.
- Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and recommend solutions.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Typical office setting with typical climate controls. Tasks require a variety of physical activities such as walking, standing, stooping, sifting, reaching, not generally involving muscular strain.
Job functions normally require talking, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand and finger dexterity required for most essential functions. Mental application utilizes memory for detail, verbal instructions, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving.

Pay: $42,100.00 - $63,100.00 per year
