Position Summary:

JCCA is seeking Bilingual Teachers who will be responsible for providing culturally diverse structured education, Monday through Friday, year-round. This includes, but is not limited to: the development and delivery of educational services to youth in the shelter program, the facilitation of a curriculum that meets all New York State Educational requirements, ensuring safety through classroom management and overseeing the administration of initial education assessments, and developing educational goals in conjunction with the Teacher’s Assistant. Curriculum development should include all basic academic areas: Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL)

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provide educational services based on the individual academic development, literacy level, and linguistic ability of each unaccompanied child.
  • Adapt or modify local educational standards to develop curricula and assessments, in basic academic areas (Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, Physical Education, and English as a Second Language (ESL), if applicable).
  • Deliver age appropriate and culturally competent material to prepare youth for entering the public school system
  • Provide remedial education and after school tutoring as needed.
  • Create a developmentally appropriate program for our students.
  • Develop weekly lesson plans and classroom activities.
  • Assess children’s needs and development and f ormulate academic goals for youth in care at 30-day intervals
  • Attend weekly treatment team meetings to review student behavior and progress.
  • Engage in continued professional development through attendance at in-service seminars, participation in conferences and workshops and/or continued study at higher education institutions.
  • Responsible for working collaboratively with program administrators to ensure that the collaborative process between the unit supervisors, teachers, case managers and clinical staff occurs on a consistent and on-going basis to ensure that unit programming is developed, implemented and maintained.
  • Ensures accurate and timely completion of documentation as required by state and federal regulations, to include ensuring that all services provided to youth are documented in the client record and required databases in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Provides effective communication across departments and programs to ensure consistency of expectations, as well as works effectively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with families, children/youth, colleagues, consultants and community agencies.
  • Assist ensuring program operations and activities adhere to legal guidelines and internal policies.
  • Other task and responsibilities as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Spanish or English, Social work, Psychology, Sociology, or other relevant behavioral science
  • ESL (English as a Second Language) certification or other accredited training to meet the special needs of unaccompanied children.
  • Must be bilingual, English/Spanish; other language skills may be acceptable depending on service population
  • Must be able to pass all required pre-employment screenings per ORR contractual agreement

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Sensitivity to the developmental stages and well-being of children with diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Strong organizational, planning and documentation skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of an extended cross-functional team.
  • Proficient with MS Office with the ability to learn new technology platforms;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team that are culturally and professionally diverse.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Classroom teaching experience in an accredited early childhood facility
  • Experience working with special needs students
  • Experience in classroom intervention strategies for students who have experienced trauma

Annual Salary: $85,000-$95,000
