Job Summary
Works with customers to promote storage management, backup technology, monitoring services, and server systems administration. Helps ensure the operating reliability and efficiency of server hardware and software for the University's administrative computer system in multiple sites. Responsible for the 24x7 technical support of System Office services hosted on AITS servers. Requires technical expertise with storage management, disaster recovery practices, backup systems, and administrating various operating systems on servers. Responsibilities include solving technical issues and following direction in the design and implementation of complex systems. Requires understanding of and experience assigning, modifying, and removing storage on servers in a SAN environment, maintaining and operating backup solutions, designing and implementing disaster recovery practices, and the ability to involve risk assessment and user support.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • 1. Configure and manage the AITS storage area network (SAN) and storage infrastructure:
    • Develop, manage, and forecast capacity requirements based on business needs and IT infrastructure growth capacity.
    • Analyze and summarize information and trends using reports, proposals, and presentations to provide for capacity and performance management of the SAN and backup environments.
    • Provide management reports and trend analyses for utilization and consumption; recommend action plans, where warranted.
  • 2. Configure and manage the AITS backup service:
    • Implement and conduct periodic maintenance of the backup environment to provide for the protection and recovery of University data.
    • Monitor systems to ensure ample storage is available for backups and to detect operational problems and provide support for their resolution.
    • Ensure data recovery, maintenance, data integrity, and space requirements are met across a variety of platforms.
    • Ensure capacity workload modeling and availability analysis is performed for all platforms.
    • Safeguard information and comply with independent software vendor, industrial, and legal requirements.
    • Ensure all servers are backed up regularly.
    • Restore data as needed.
  • 3. Help write, implement, and update disaster recovery plans
  • 4. Manage and maintain servers:
    • Requires the knowledge to configure and understand the tools that monitor the “health” of all servers.
    • Provides backup and disaster recovery.
    • Maintains and updates server inventory.
    • Participate in the on-call rotation for server administrators.
  • 5. Performs system maintenance:
    • Apply operating system updates and configuration changes along with updating utility software products on the storage, backup, monitoring, and computer systems.
    • Coordinate the software maintenance with campus units and vendors.
    • Coordinate tasks with other groups and schedules changes through change control.
  • 6. Maintain system security:
    • Work on server security issues found with internal AITS network scanning tools
    • Stay current with technological developments and recommends ways to take advantage of new technology to improve security.
  • 7. Manages server hardware in accordance with industry best practices:
    • Repairs/replaces hardware components to ensure high availability; troubleshoots and resolves hardware problems for all systems.
    • Configures servers and connects them to the SAN.
    • Works with the team to provide the facilities management of all system components.
  • 8. Keeps informed of new technology in the field and participates in the preparation of long-range comprehensive support plans.
  • 9. Provides expertise, advice, and training to technical staff in the organization.
  • 10. Provide on-call and off-hours support as assigned:
    • Participate in the on-call rotation for server administrators, which rotates through each person in the group.
    • The position requires a high level of service, and the individual must be reachable and able to respond to issues/problems within published service response times, either from the employee’s office location or remotely.
  • 11. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Two years of progressively more responsible work experience in an Information Technology (IT) related profession. College course work which included Information Technology (IT), IT Management, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows: 60 semester hours or Associate's Degree equals one (1) year, 90-120 semester hours or Bachelor's Degree equals two (2) years.

Preferred Qualifications
1. Experience with enterprise disaster recovery plans and practice
2. Experience monitoring enterprise servers to prevent outages and keep them running at peak performance
3. Experience being a Windows, Solaris or Linux system administrator
4. Bachelor's Degree
5. Experience with high-end SANs and backup solutions, preferably with Solaris, Linux, or Windows servers. Would prefer that the experience involved fibre channel, WANs, LANs, monitoring, and diagnostic tools.
6. Prefer 3-5 years IT work experience in complex systems design, storage management, backup management, and systems software and support.
7. Experience with design, installation, documentation, and administration of storage area networks.
8. Experience with design, installation, documentation, and administration of backup services.
9. Experience with administrating either Solaris, Linux, or Windows servers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • 1. Analytical and technical skills to support troubleshooting, planning, and administration of enterprise storage, SANs, backup solutions, disaster recovery, and monitoring.
  • 2. Working knowledge of University structure and procedures.
  • 3. Proficiency in oral and written communications, including the ability to effectively communicate technical information to technical or non-technical staff.
  • 4. Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively.

Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 5031 - Information Technology Technical Associate position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the close date. Salary is commensurate with experience. The salary range starts at $85,000. Professional development opportunities are available. Hybrid or remote work arrangement for position will be considered based on skills and experience.
