Summary
Under general supervision and as part of a team, the Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for the administration of the standard risk assessment and diagnostic testing instruments with participants. This position will be assigned specific participants, referred to as a “caseload” and monitor the service delivery for these residents while they are in the program from intake to discharge. Interviews participants, reviews files and testing scores and prepares assessment reports to determine the level of care necessary.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Administers, scores and interprets all required screening and assessment tools including but not limited to the Texas Christian University Assessment Suite, Mental Health Screening and the Criminal Thinking Scales.
- May also use other assessment and substance abuse evaluation tools to support level of care American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) placement.
- Conducts screenings and assessments during the intake process and back-end screenings for standing populations.
- Conducts post testing for participants as they go through the program.
- Interviews participants to collect additional data not covered by above assessment tools.
- May review the Alabama Bureau of Pardons and Parole files.
- Scores and interprets results of assessment and testing tools.
- Prepares written reports based on results of assessment and testing tools.
- Creates and maintains individual treatment plans for the participants
- Conducts group and individual sessions.
- Completes discharge and aftercare plans
- Participates in staffing regarding participants with other team members
- Other duties, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Health and Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling or related field.
- Certified as a Qualified Substance Abuse Professional (QSAP III), Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) or Senior Alcohol and Drug Counselor by the Alabama Association of Addictions Counselors Certification Board.
- Ability to work a varied schedule that may include evenings.
- Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate with participants, other staff, and leadership personnel and react quickly and appropriately in an emergency situation.
- Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the Department.
- American Psychological Association’s Standards for Educational and Psychological Testing.
