JOB DESCRIPTIONDearborn AcademySTEM Teacher- Special Educator- 10 monthsStart Date: ASAP2022-2023 school year full-time positionOverviewDearborn Academy, one of New Englands leading 766 approved therapeutic day schools, is seeking a full time special education teacher for the 2022-2023 school year. Dearborn enrolls up to sixty students in grades 3-12 who have specific learning disabilities and/or mild to moderate emotional challenges. Our rich academic program, diversified student support and explicit instruction, combined with our strong clinical component, allows students who have been unsuccessful in previous school settings to achieve substantial gains. The STEM teacher will join our enthusiastic teaching team to instruct in math, technology, and computer science.
In addition to their teaching responsibilities, teachers at Dearborn maintain frequent communication with families and collaborate with therapists and specialists as part of students' teams. Due to the special needs of our students, teachers work with students on their social and emotional skills. Teachers at Dearborn are not isolated: each receives weekly supervision, and teaches a total of 40 students in small groups of 5-12 with support from an assistant teacher or other related service provider. The successful candidate for this challenging and rewarding position will have the following qualities and experience: - Demonstrated compassion, curiosity, and kindness towards students, families, and staff- Experience creating, teaching, and implementing differentiated, tiered instruction that is strengths-based - Well-organized and able to create a classroom environment supportive of learning and exploring- Self starter with a collaborative style; someone who values a community of highly-engaged team members - Belief that students who demonstrate unexpected behaviors have gaps in their skills, with a drive to identify these gaps, and then teach to the skill areas to address these gaps- Excellent relational skills with students, parents, and peers- Excellent verbal and written communication skills- Massachusetts teaching license in respective area Duties/Responsibilities: Curriculum and Instruction-1.
Plan and implement individual and group lessons that are aligned to students' IEPs, Massachusetts State Standards, NGSS, Common Core Standards, and the school curriculum.2. Create routines that allow for development and practice of students executive function skills.3. Integrate assistive technology and multi-modal learning into academic instruction in accordance with school goals and student IEPs.4. Provide ongoing assessment of students to determine progress and to gather data for quarterly reporting.5.
Work on a collaborative team to consistently review data and internal/external reports, to support students in developing and improving their academic and social skills.6. Ensure supervision of students at all times.7. Supervise assistant teacher.Communication and Supervision1. Collaborate with clinical staff in developing approaches for individual students and for the class that reflects their clinical and social emotional needs.2.
Work cooperatively and openly communicate with all staff to maximize students' success.3. Attend all required school meetings (e.g., staff meetings, in-services trainings, emergency meetings, etc.).4. Attend IEP and other meetings with families and collaterals and participate in a way that positively reflects the school's goals of putting students and families first.5. Write educational plans, quarterly progress reports, and other reports, as needed, in a timely fashion and professional manner.6.
Establish a productive relationship with families that includes sharing of information and regular positive contact.7. Participate actively in weekly supervision. 8. Lead weekly community building circles, as part of the school's restorative practice model.Community Engagement: 1.
Maintain a trauma informed, organized, welcoming classroom that celebrates the diversity of the student body, current curriculum, and students' achievements.2. Participate/support school-wide activities such as field day, celebrations, clubs, etc.3. Develop and maintain a safe relationship with students.4. Maintain a manner consistent with the agency commitment to honest, direct communication between all members of our staff, faculty and administration as an essential feature of creating a positive working and learning environment for our students.5.
Demonstrate respect for diversity among our staff and student body. Promote an atmosphere that values this diversity.6.
