DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, 168 academic appointees, 331 residents, fellow and postdocs and 479 staff personnel.

Under supervision of the principal investigator (PI), incumbent will independently conduct studies with molecular and cellular methods that include a wide variety of molecular biology, biochemical, and tissue culture techniques, using In Vivo and In Vitro model systems. Incumbent will be responsible for performing techniques, including cell culture, flow cytometry, and participating in animal studies (mouse work). Performs other related functions as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Theoretical and practical knowledge of life science such as biology, molecular biology, and biochemistry including relevant laboratory techniques as typically acquired by a Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience with cell culture, flow cytometry, cell characterization assays, and molecular biology methods.

• Research laboratory experience with common techniques including cell culture and molecular biology methods.

• Demonstrated ability with animal (mouse) techniques, specifically ultrasound, bioluminescent imaging and injections.

• Bachelor's degree in Biological sciences, Immunology, Genetics, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Experience with human iPSC culture and differentiation.

• Demonstrated ability to set priorities and to organize a varied workload to meet deadlines despite frequent interruptions.

• Familiarity with Cal-OSHA and EH&S safety requirements including MSDS's, hazard communication & Injury and Illness Prevention Program; laboratory safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, use of protective items such as gloves and goggles as well as basic first aid procedures.

• Excellent communication and record keeping skills.

PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS

• Masters degree in Biological sciences, Immunology, Genetics, or related field.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Willing to work with hazardous materials (biological, chemical, and radioactive) and animals.

• Willing to work overtime and weekends as experimental protocols demand.
