Deaf Community Counseling Services

Program Overview
Deaf Community Counseling Services (DCCS) was formerly known UCSF Center on Deafness (UCCD) and is in three offices: San Francisco, Alameda, and Berkeley. In 2015, DCCS partnered with Felton Institute (formerly Family Service Agency of San Francisco- FSA), which is the oldest nonprofit agency in San Francisco County. For 103 years, Felton Institute responds to human needs with cutting-edge social services and mental health programs that combine the best social science research with cultural sensitivity, a deep respect for the individuals served, and a commitment to social justice.

DCCS is of, by, and for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Deaf Blind, Deaf Plus (with developmental disabilities or cognitive challenges), and Late Deafened by empowering Deaf & Hard of Hearing clients to live self-sufficient lives through a transformative focus on their overall well-being. DCCS supports and educates the community on the importance of healing, integrating care for their cognitive, emotional, and behavioral health.

DCCS provides clinical assessment, targeted case management, crisis intervention, psychotherapy, rehabilitation counseling, psychiatric services/medication support, and DCCS has been networking with primary care providers and schools in surrounding counties committed to quality and innovation for providing comprehensive care within the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

Job Description
This permanent position allows part time ASL interpreter to coordinates with DCCS Administrative Manager/Interpreter by providing high-quality interpreting three times per week in a mental health setting for staff and clients that will take place in person, via videophone relay, or teleconference application such as Zoom. ASL Interpreter assesses individual situations to determine the communication needs of Deaf and Hard of Hearing and use other communication modes such as ProTactile, Pidgin Signed English (PSE) or Signing Exact English (SEE).

Program Specific Responsibilities
  • Interpret or transliterate sessions between Hard of Hearing and Late Deafened clients and DCCS clinical case managers/therapists,
  • Interpret for DCCS staff who provide services to hearing family of Deaf youth
  • Provide audio captioning support for Deaf staff with vlogs and other social media bites,
  • Work with other interpreters by utilizing appropriate team interpreting strategies and techniques,
  • Uses communication methods appropriate for clients’ developmental age and mental conditions,
  • Provide ASL interpreting for clients with medical staff/psychiatrists as determined necessary by
  • Program Director and Medical staff, and
  • Interpret for staff’s internal training and meetings.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Fluency in American Sign Language is required.
  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written English.
  • At least three to five years’ experience in ASL-English Interpreting (and at least six months experience in mental health setting)
  • Knowledge of and adherence to RID Code of Professional Conduct
  • Interpret messages from English to American Sign Language (Voice-to-Sign) and from American Sign Language to English (Sign-to-Voice).
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and renders unbiased interpretation to ensure an accurate exchange of information.
  • Remain current on developments, trends, and techniques in the interpreting field, especially in a mental health setting.
  • Flexibility in working with wide range of Deaf backgrounds and communication needs.
  • Knowledge and familiarity of Deaf, Deaf Blind, Hard of Hearing, and Late Deafened cultures.
  • Knowledge of American Disabilities Act and other anti-discrimination laws.
  • Ability to work within a changing schedule (i.e., short notice assignments that occasionally come up).
  • Possess driver’s license to travel between offices and has DMV license.
  • Must pass the company's interpreting skills assessment
  • Bilingual Spanish/ASL interpreters are encouraged to apply.
