Sr Engineering Specialist-Gas Turbines Job at Northern Natural Gas Company
Purpose of Position
The purpose of this position is to provide management oversight and advanced technical assistance and guidance related to operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and performance of gas compression, with a primary emphasis on gas turbine/compressor packages and equipment manufactured by Solar Turbines, Inc.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)
Provide advanced technical assistance for the prompt resolution and efficient troubleshooting of operational, maintenance, controls, and performance issues of compression equipment and auxiliaries, with primary emphasis on gas turbine/compressor packages and equipment manufactured by Solar Turbines, Inc.
Conduct remote troubleshooting and support timely resolution of Solar gas turbine/compressor package equipment issues, failed starts, alarms, and shutdowns through advanced interpretation of trend data, log file reports, drawings/schematics, piping and instrument diagrams (P&IDs), control logic, and ability to interface with the Solar Turbotronic controls system.
Ability to diligently evaluate and make changes to control logic sequences, setpoints, timers, and conduct controls tuning to optimize equipment availability and remedy issues and control logic faults without compromising safety.
Manage issues and resources from various parts of the company to support a large fleet of Solar and other gas turbine packages to ensure optimum reliability, availability, and performance. This includes but is not limited to tracking and escalation of fleet issues, technical bulletin management and fleet compliance, capital projects/upgrades, spare parts, design standardization, starting reliability, etc. Globalize best practices and lessons learned.
Provide support for all Solar turbine exchange and overhaul events, field repairs, annual inspections/maintenance activities, and failure investigations.
Provide oversight and guidance to optimize preventative, predictive, and performance monitoring programs and practices for Solar gas turbine/compressor packages.
Support gas turbine emissions testing, tuning, and combustion/engine performance optimization.
Provide support for new compression equipment and capital upgrades, including support to engineering project teams for design and specification, controls integration, commissioning, and testing.
Develop, deliver, and help coordinate training for front-line operations and maintenance personnel to enhance competencies with effective operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of Solar Turbines and other gas turbine equipment.
Organize and maintain accurate and comprehensive centralized records associated with operation and maintenance of the gas turbine/compression fleet. This includes but is not limited to asset information, operational data, maintenance records/reports, operations and maintenance manuals, drawings/schematics, wiring diagrams, technical bulletins, bill of materials, etc.
Manage, coordinate, and provide general support/oversight to the work of third-party contractors.
Perform any additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in engineering, technology, business administration or related field; or equivalent work experience. (Typically, six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor’s degree.)
Ten or more years of applicable operations and maintenance experience with gas turbine/compressor packages, with advanced competencies in mechanical, controls, and instrument disciplines.
Advanced knowledge of gas turbine/compressor fundamentals, operations, maintenance, control schemes, protective devices/systems, including all associated auxiliary equipment. Knowledgeable with compressor station operations, maintenance, and reciprocating compression equipment.
Advanced knowledge and experience with Solar Turbotronic and legacy controls systems and associated software tools. This includes experience with Rockwell RS Logix 5000 software and other Solar specific software applications such as EngPerf, HistoryViewer, Stripchart, etc.
Familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLC), human machine interfaces (HMI), variable frequency drives (VFD), and communication techniques such as MOBOS, Device Net, ControlNet, ethernet, and serial links.
Leadership and supervision abilities to assure effective management of turbine fleet budget programs, unit exchanges and supervision/monitoring of maintenance.
Ability to use and interpret drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, controls logic, technical data, and similar documentation.
Must possess excellent analytical skills as necessary to systematically work through mechanical, controls, and instrument problems, identify root cause, and formulate recommendations for corrective actions.
Strong communication and relationship building skills, with ability to lead, promote collaboration, and develop rapport with internal and external resources towards a common objective in complex and high stress situations.
Ability to effectively prioritize workload, manage projects, and make independent decisions.
Working knowledge of applicable regulations (DOT, EPA, OSHA, etc), engineering standards, policies and procedures.
Strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc) and ability to learn new applications.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.
Subject to high temperatures and loud noises in engine rooms and exposure to high and low temperatures, and icy/snowy weather conditions.

This position requires approximately 25% travel within area of responsibility.
