The Speech Language Pathologist will be a key member of the clinical team with the role of not only providing evaluative and treatment services to our clients, but contributing to our clinical decision and development of therapeutic programs. The Speech Language Pathologist will participate in initial functional assessment of potential clients, and assist in formulating a program. The position involves providing assessments, evaluations, writing feeding guidelines and the monitoring of client’s progress in the areas of speech, language and feeding skills. The Speech Language Pathologist while employed or thereafter, must comply with any and all investigations with DDD, OOL, DHS, and/or APS.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Deliver Speech, Language and Communication therapy to clients at the Day Program, as part of individual and/or group, according to client’s ISPs
- For incoming clients, as part of the intake process, do a speech, feeding and swallowing evaluation (when evidence of Dysphagia has been indicated), establish existence of feeding tubes and tracheostomies to determine if incoming client needs can be met
- Write feeding guidelines for clients with a doctor’s prescription for an altered diet
- Write feeding recommendations pursuant to my clinical evaluation for all clients that do not have a doctor’s prescription
- Ensure that feeding guidelines/recommendations contain solid and liquid consistency, feeding technique, food allergy information, EpiPen information including location, any dietary restrictions, seizure disorder information, diabetes information, lactose intolerance information, adaptive equipment, client positioning, and level of assistance and supervision
- Call families and group homes to advocate for a doctor’s prescription if deemed appropriate
- Recommend and advocate for Modified Barium Studies (MBS) when deemed appropriate
- Ensure that the feeding guidelines/recommendations are shared with family members and group homes, and that they are posted in each client’s program area and kitchen
- Oversee kitchen/food prep to ensure lunches/snacks are prepared appropriately, be available to advise on consistencies, ensure we have proper equipment and ingredients for food prep to achieve required consistencies (blenders/microwaves/knives/chicken broth/etc.)
- If/when families/group homes send in inappropriate food/consistencies, reach out verbally and in writing to ensure future compliance to guidelines/recommendations
- As part of employee orientation, train staff members on client guidelines/recommendations and have them sign off that they were trained and that their questions were answered
- Hold Dysphagia Training on site twice annually
- During lunch, monitor clients and ensure guidelines/recommendations are being adhered to
- Upon evaluating a client, bring speech recommendations to the Vice President of Clinical Services to advocate with support coordinators for speech services to be added to client’s ISPs
Qualifications
- NJ Certified from the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA)
- Graduate from an accredited program
- Experience with population served is preferred
- Knowledge of development and associated diagnosis required
- Minimum experience of 1 year in the field
- CPR/First Aid certified, AHA preferred
- Familiar with the DDD policies is a plus
