Specialist Cyber Security Representative - US Job at Foreign & Commonwealth Office
Main purpose of job:
Be a part of the Department for International Trade’s mission to drive more trade and investment between North America and the UK. We are looking for a Cyber Representative to lead the DIT cyber security export campaigns in the USA and offer strategic insight for the North and South American region. You will make use of your expertise and background to identify opportunities for UK cyber security exports and to offer advice and support to UK businesses on how to win these contracts. You will develop an understanding of the market opportunities in North and South America and offer strategic advice on the best way to win or influence cyber security export opportunities for UK companies or collaborative ventures.
The role is located within the British Embassy in Washington DC. You will be expected to travel regularly throughout the US and occasionally to other countries in North and South America. Your focus will be on understanding market opportunities through market analysis; engagement with customers in the public and private sector; and recommending and leading strategic engagement opportunities through trade missions, conferences, seminars or bilateral contacts.
This role also sits within the Security & Cyber Exports team within UK Defence and Security Exports, which supports the global network of British Embassies to ensure that UK-based cyber security companies win contracts in international markets. Within the Department for International Trade, UK Defence & Security Exports (UK DSE) supports UK companies in the defence, physical security and cyber security sectors to export, invest and win. We use DIT’s network of over 5,000 trade staff based in 120 countries to promote innovation, opportunity and partnership around the world. Our deep knowledge of UK capability enables us to match international partners’ requirements with world-leading solutions. Roles and responsibilities:
- Advise high-growth and innovative UK cyber security companies, particularly Small and Medium Sized companies on routes to enter markets for the first time and how to grow their business once established.
- Lead and deliver a regional market strategy to promote the international growth of companies from the UK cyber security sector. This will identify the key sectors where there are the most attractive opportunities for UK businesses.
- Using your expertise drive strategic discussion and planning with the London based cyber security team and colleagues in the British Embassy to shape and deliver the market strategy including providing technical guidance, advising on campaigns, and the delivery of major trade missions.
- Develop and maintain a network of contacts with cyber security leaders across industry, government and academia within the US to build long term strategic partnerships. This will include acting as a key point of contact with potential buyers in market, to identify their specific requirements and to understand what the UK can offer.
- Keep pace with market trends, incentives and centres of excellence in North America and the UK to identify commercial opportunities and provide informed advice to clients.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to deliver high-impact programming, including developing and hosting round tables, seminars and trade missions, and high level support of Ministerial and other VIP visit programmes.

Essential on arrival:
- Proven competence in leading strategy development and business planning.
- Excellent stakeholder management abilities. Ability to act with autonomy, opening doors and retaining the trust of a range of stakeholders. Experience of developing relationships and building influence in public and private sectors.
- Excellent interpersonal, presentation and networking skills; capable of operating at all organisational levels.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills, with the ability to influence, guide and educate at all levels. Able to synthesise complex information, identify key issues and propose next steps and solutions to problems. You will brief the Cyber Security Ambassador on a regular basis and will need to shape and develop her programme and priorities to make best use of her time when visiting the region.
- Able to apply technical and market knowledge to provide advice to UK industry and overseas clients.
- Strong IT skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams)
- Must be able to attend events outside of office hours and undertake travel in the US and internationally up to 20% of your time.
- Driving license.
