We are a non-profit, public-private partnership founded in 2016 as one of the Department of Defense (DoD) funded Manufacturing USA Innovation Institutes. Headquartered in Cambridge, MA, AFFOA’s mission is to rekindle the textiles industry by leading a nationwide enterprise for advanced fiber & fabric technology and manufacturing innovation, enabling revolutionary new system capabilities for commercial and defense applications. AFFOA is uniquely positioned to establish and build supply chains to rapidly prototype for DoD and commercial needs while also focusing on preparing and building the workforce of the future that can support these new manufacturing needs. AFFOA partners with its member companies including startups, universities, manufacturers, commercial industry, and defense partners to bring advanced fiber technologies to market.
We are currently seeking a senior program manager to join the team, they will be responsible to plan, manage, and implement a range of prototyping, demonstration, new product development, and contracted research projects to meet our technology, manufacturing and educational objectives. Projects are multi-performer (start-ups, universities, non-traditional defense contractors), and are designed to transition new technologies into product platforms through scaled manufacturing processes. Implement project management processes balancing the needs of a start-up business environment with expectations of government and or large industry funded programs. The individual will report to the Vice President of Strategic Growth.

Job Duties

  • Coordinate, execute, monitor, control and ensure successful completion of AFFOA’s portfolio of projects consistent with the Institute’s mission, strategy, and goals and ensure projects are on-time and within scope.
  • Effectively use project management tools to execute cradle-to-grave project management activities including, but not limited to scheduling, resource allocation, budgets, risk management, and technical deliverables.
  • Collaborate with the technical team on the development of new proposals providing input on project resourcing, cost and timing.
  • Support the project teams by creating performance metrics, establishing milestones, refining deliverables, developing proposals, drafting SOWs, creating specifications, and developing technical reports.
  • Meet requirements for reporting on DoD funded programs.
  • As the point of contact for DoD and Industrial clients, coordinate and conduct periodic project updates reporting on budget, scope, schedule and risk ensuring compliance to client requirements and business needs.
  • Lead and support project teams with varied stakeholders including customers, 3rd party vendors, and others in a professional manner, exhibiting outstanding leadership, accountability, and facilitation skills.
  • Prepare accurate project estimates and resource plans incorporating appropriate risk mitigation strategies.

Qualifications

  • BS in a technical (e.g. physics or material science) or engineering discipline; PMP Certification Preferred
  • Min. 10 years’ project management experience in leading multiple, concurrent projects within an R&D, manufacturing, and/or government contracting environment
  • Demonstrated product management skills related to project planning and control, scope management, issue and risk management and quality management
  • Experience working alongside business development team to develop business proposals that assess project fit, resources demands, timeline and budget for project management roadmap
  • Experience working in an Agile environment preferred
  • Expertise as an agent of change, willing to implement project management methodologies consistent with a start-up culture
  • Significant consulting experience in multi - customer-facing engagements. Proven professionalism, conflict resolution, leadership and accountability.
  • Experience in technology transfer and commercialization
  • Expertise in developing and negotiating deliverables for government contracts
  • Proven experience in ability to manage expectations of government sponsors, technical staff, and C-level executives
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing in a positive manner
  • Comfortable presenting technical results to a range of audiences

Work Authorization
To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, including the International Traffic In Arms Regulations (ITAR), you must be one of the following: a U.S. citizen, a lawful permanent resident of the U.S., a protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
