Senior Research Engineer-Heat Transfer Team

Raytheon Technologies Research Center (RTRC) develops new technologies that enable the most innovative products in the world. If you enjoy leveraging your technical expertise in thermal engineering to work across disciplines and on a range of applications, the Heat Transfer Team is a good fit for you. Our Senior Research Engineer position demands strong engineering fundamentals, expertise in analytical and numerical physics-based modeling, and the ability to come to meaningful research conclusions.

On the Heat Transfer Team, you’ll be expected to contribute to the many of the following areas:

  • Develop and apply advanced optimization design models including parametric optimization and topology optimization for thermal components such as heat sinks, cold plates, heat exchangers, and integrated flow channels.
  • Create and utilize physical test systems in the areas of additively manufactured fluid/thermal coupons, two-phase flow loops, and thermal interface characterization.
  • Develop and apply high-fidelity and reduced order modeling of single- and two-phase flows.
  • Develop cooling strategies for electronics with high and/or transient heat fluxes, such as heterogeneous integration, microchannel cooling, passive heat spreaders, jet impingement, and phase change materials.
  • Predict device reliability with thermomechanical modeling.
  • Develop emerging thermal management technologies to enable advancements in areas of additive manufacturing, microelectronics, power electronics, electric machines, aircraft systems, avionics, radar systems, sensor systems, and space systems.
  • Develop cryogenic systems and components including advanced cooling cycles.
  • Contribute to developing technologies by increasing their Technology Readiness Level with the goal of transitioning the technology to be used in real-world products.
  • Invent new technology products and processes resulting in patents.

Basic qualifications:

  • Deep understanding in the areas of heat transfer and thermal engineering.
  • Analytic modeling and programming skills in common languages.
  • Understanding of FEA and CFD modeling.
  • Experience working in a research laboratory environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in publishing and presenting research.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident (Green Card) required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • The quality of adaptability to take on a wide array of research challenges while leveraging deep expertise in specific areas.
  • The ability to tackle technical and ill-defined problems, identify a research path, and create solutions.

Location:

  • This position is in East Hartford CT and is a hybrid role. (Expected to work on-site 2-5 days per week).
  • Relocation package is offered for this position.

Education requirements:

  • Ph.D. or M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Physics is required.
  • Ph.D. candidates with research in a relevant technical area.
  • M.S. candidates with 4+ years of relevant job experience.

Typically requires:

  • A University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years' experience.

Engineering/Other Technical Positions:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
