Waterfront Park is seeking a skilled and experienced Sound Engineer to join our team for the 2023 season (May-September). The Sound Engineer will be responsible for the setup, operation, and live sound mix for various events held at the park. This includes concerts, festivals, classes, and other public gatherings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the execution of sound requirements and event setup of sound equipment at community-centered cultural events at Pier 62
  • Collaborate with the Production Manager, Programs Lead, and performers, and production crews to determine sound requirements and coordinate the day-of setup of sound equipment.
  • Set up, test, and maintain onsite equipment, including microphones, amplifiers, speakers, and mixing boards.
  • Monitor and adjust sound levels during events to ensure optimal sound quality and monitor the sound pressure levels (SPL) during the event.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues and make necessary adjustments to equipment during events.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety and regulatory standards related to sound equipment and systems.
  • Break down sound gear post event and ensure their proper storage and maintenance.
  • While on site, adhere to Friends’ public safety protocols
  • Use a community-centered and collaborative mindset when working with the public, artists, clients, performers, staff, and vendors.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience as a sound engineer, preferably in a live outdoor, event setting.
  • A desire to propel diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism to the forefront of your work.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the set-up and operation of sound equipment, including mixing for live bands.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including performers, event organizers, and production crews.
  • Strong attention to detail, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to troubleshoot technical issues and adjust sound levels in real-time.
  • Ability to handle stress and stay organized, focused, and customer service oriented during live events.
  • Familiarity with safety and regulatory standards related to sound equipment and systems.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as required.

Desired Qualifications

  • Lived experience and cultural competency with underrepresented communities, including Black, Indigenous, Latine, disabled, and/or LGBTQ+ communities, and the ability to bring this lens to conversations about anti-racism, anti-oppression and embedding equity in all aspects of work.
  • Familiarity working with a wide variety of art and culture performances encouraged.
  • Experience with both analog and digital sound consoles.
  • Additional years (5+) experience as a sound engineer for live events.

Compensation and Benefits

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Sound Engineer position is a seasonal, hourly, non-exempt position with flexible hours. The 2023 programming season runs from mid-May to the end of September.

The hourly salary range for this position is $27.00/hour to $33.65/hour.


Work Environment

This role is in Seattle, WA. This position will primarily work onsite at Pier 62. Additional work sites may be added as more of Waterfront Park opens this summer.


Job Requirements

  • Ability to individually lift and carry up to 30lbs and team lift up to 60 lbs, stand for an extended period of time, climb ladders, work with hand tools. Ability to walk to various park locations, that may require climbing stairs, and traveling a minimum of 1 mile of waterfront property.
  • Ability to monitor SPL (sound pressure levels) and differentiate a variety of sounds at various volume levels related to mixing amplified music.
  • Ability to work for an extended period in outdoor environmental conditions consisting of wind, rain, snow, and heat.
  • Ability to pass a background check.
