GISNY is seeking a dynamic candidate to join our team as Safety and Security Officer. The Safety and Security Officer is responsible for establishing and maintaining a safe and secure school environment for students, employees and visitors by collaborating with the Administration and Board of Trustees to develop and enforce comprehensive safety and security policies/procedures; establish access control and accident prevention protocols; support risk management efforts; and manage fire safety, emergency preparedness, asset protection and traffic enforcement programs/initiatives.

The Safety and Security Officer reports to the Business Manager.

JOB FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Safety and Security Officer shall

Serve as the school’s liaison with the White Plains Police Department, White Plains Fire Department, and any other related agencies and collaborate closely with them, whenever applicable.

Establish and oversee safety and security plans, procedures, and manuals to ensure compliance to local, state, and federal law, contractual obligations as well as to maintain best practices in the education sector. A comprehensive School Safety and Security program should include:

o Appropriate lighting and signage;

o Building safety systems (fire and security);

o Building surveillance systems;

o Equipment identification procedures;

o Student and personnel identification procedures;

o Visitor registration and identification procedures;

o Emergency plans for evacuations, lock downs, and other crises;

o Safety staff orientation and training programs;

o Effective and efficient deployment of security personnel, as needed; and

o Coordination of services with local, State and Federal Law enforcement, first responders and emergency agencies.

Integrate safety, security, and emergency preparedness measures into the school’s daily practices in a manner supportive of a school environment.

Coordinate and conduct safety, security, and emergency preparedness training by developing, scheduling and/or facilitating training and drills for all staff and students on a regular basis. Maintain appropriate records of all such drills, among others fire and lockdown drills.

Manage the school access software, including issuance of school IDs and access cards for students and school personnel.

Coordinate with the school’s Administration any referrals of students and staff to the federal, state, and local agencies, as required. Protect confidentiality of records and information about students and staff and use discretion when sharing any such information within legal confines.

Coordinate and supervise pool of non-faculty employees assigned to hallway and outdoor supervision. Act as supervisor, if needed.

Supervise busses at arrival and dismissal times in coordination with other supervisors.

In collaboration with the school administrator recruit, employ and train any additional safety personnel as required.

Serve as a role model for students and staff in demonstrating positive attitudes, appropriate attire and grooming, and an effective work ethic.

Administer the budget for safety to ensure the most cost-effective utilization of resources, work with the Administration and Facilities on any needed capital improvements.

Actively support facility team with projects during vacations, especially summer months.

Any other tasks assigned by the school’s Business Manager.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduate degree preferred but not required

Significant demonstrated professional work experience in at least one of the primary fields relating to this position:

o Law enforcement

o Security, preferably in K-12 school

o Risk management

o Fire service

o Emergency management

Multitasking capability, demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills, detail oriented

High degree of ethical standards, diplomacy, flexibility, and adaptability

Ability to foster a safe, warm, and caring learning environment

Patient, effective, and clear communicator with good written and verbal communication skills

Ability to take initiative and work independently

Strong team player

Computer software literacy (Office 365)

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES & CLEARANCES

Valid Driver’s License and evidence of insurability

Fingerprinting

Any of the following trainings would be an asset but are not mandatory

o Approved Police Academy or equivalent

o Tactical Response Training

o Emergency Management Certification

o Hazard Mitigation & Prevention

Pay: $60,000.00 - $70,000.00 per year
