The Sultan School District is one of the larger geographical school districts in the Puget Sound area, consisting of approximately 325 square miles. Sultan School District has approximately 2,000 students enrolled K-12. Students are currently served by two elementary schools, a middle school, a high school and an alternative high school; and the Sno-Isle Skills Center, a cooperative vocational technical school.

Located northeast of Seattle (seven miles east of Monroe) or about 20 minutes from the Woodinville area, Sultan is surrounded by a beautiful environmental setting. Nature and Scope of Position:

Under direction of the Transportation Supervisor, this position will assist in the planning, organization and coordination of a pupil transportation program; to assist in the development of bus routes and the scheduling and assigning of bus driver personnel; and to do other related work as required.

Essential Job Functions:

This list of essential job functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Depending upon individual assignment, the employee may perform all or a combination of several of the following duties:

  • Assist in planning and developing school bus routes and schedules utilizing such factors as traffic conditions, pupil load size, potential road hazards, student safety, cost effectiveness and other factors using the Traversa Routing Program.
  • Prepare recommendations, assists in the development and adjustment for changes in bus routes and schedules to obtain maximum utilization of equipment and personnel.
  • Coordinate all student transportation dispatch activities for Specialized Transportation.
  • Provides exemplary, respectful customer service to parents, students, staff and members of the community through both verbal and written communication
  • Coordinate resolution of on-bus problems, parent concerns and customer requests.
  • Provide staff leadership in the absence of the Transportation Supervisor.
  • Communicate with transportation staff to assist in route awareness, resolution of route problems, and calculation of route times. Participates in department meetings, in-service trainings, workshops, etc. for learning new processes required to perform essential job functions.
  • Travel bus routes and evaluates and reports view obstructions and road hazards to the appropriate agency.
  • Assist in assigning and scheduling bus drivers to athletic and special study trips in coordination with the regular pupil transportation scheduling.
  • Prepare zone maps and discusses bus routing with the drivers.
  • Review mileage for student required walking areas.
  • Arrange for and assign substitute drivers.
  • Maintain and compile data and information regarding the pupil transportation program, and prepare concise and clear summaries as required.
  • Assist in the planning, organization and conduct of transportation personnel orientation and in-service training programs.
  • Confer with, counsel and advise transportation, school and administrative personnel concerning student behavior management problems, scheduling conflicts and the resolution of complaints or problem situations.
  • Conduct bus inspections and reports damage, vandalism and needed maintenance.
  • May drive a school bus in an emergency situation or on a relief basis.
  • May bid a route and/or trip that does not conflict with the scheduled hours of dispatching.
  • Instructs and assists bus drivers in the performance of their duties.
  • Supervises vehicle operation of drivers.
  • Evaluates driver knowledge and skills and performance standards related to efficiency, safety and legality.
  • Prepares and maintains current and legal training progress reports.
  • Coordinates training activities with Dispatcher to insure maximum efficiency of transportation service.
  • May investigate special problems related to bus stops, loadings, etc.
  • Conducts road tests and orientation to new vehicles.
  • Performs standard bus driving duties related to special assigned schedules.
  • Assists in routine departmental functions, as requested.
  • Implements student passenger safety regulations and procedures.
  • Investigates all accidents.
  • Monitors performance of evacuation exercises biannually each school year.

Qualifications/Requirements

Knowledge/Experience/Certification:

  • Methods, procedures and practices pertaining to a comprehensive pupil transportation program.
  • Safe driving practices and procedures.
  • Geographical conditions in the Sultan School District
  • Three years’ experience as bus driver
  • Two years’ experience as a driver trainer.
  • Knowledge of state laws and regulations including WA Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code requirements in pupil transportation
  • Three years’ experience in routing/dispatching special needs student transportation
  • Hold a valid Driver Trainer certificate
  • Knowledge of best practices and methods used to train bus drivers
  • Experience using word processing, student information systems and data bases, and routing software – specifically Transversa Routing Program
  • Valid OSPI school bus driver authorization and Washington State CDL with passenger and school bus endorsements.
  • High School Diploma

Ability to:

  • Assist in planning, organization and coordination of a comprehensive pupil transportation program.
  • Assist in the planning and development of school bus routes and school bus driver schedules.
  • Schedule and conduct effective classroom and behind-the-wheel training programs for bus drivers.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records and prepare clear and concise reports.
  • Supervise and motivate bus drivers.
  • Provides exemplary, respectful customer service to parents, students, staff and members of the community through both verbal and written communication
  • Safely, effectively and efficiently drive a school bus and other transportation related equipment.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.


Mental Demands:

  • Requires decisiveness and good judgment in emergencies.
  • May occasionally be required to calm distraught, angry or hostile individuals.

Physical Demands:

  • The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
  • Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • This type of work involves operating a student transportation vehicle, sitting during much of the assignment, but will involve walking or standing for brief periods.
  • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, relaying information verbally, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION:

  • Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and skill is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skill would be:

Experience:

  • Three years of experience as a school bus driver.
  • One year of experience in a lead or supervisory capacity.
  • Previous experience in routing, dispatching, and driver trainer roles

Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, including or supplemented by coursework or training in transportation systems, organization and supervision, or a closely related area.

License and Certificate Requirements

  • Possession of a valid CDL Washington State Motor Vehicle Operator's License with Passenger endorsement.
  • Possession of a School Bus Driver Instructor Certificate, issued by Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
  • Possession of a valid First Aid /CPR Card.
  • Physical Health Certificate that applicant meets WAC 180-20-101(2)(a)(i),(ii),(iii) and (iv), and doctor’s certification that applicant meets the requirements of WAC 180-20-101(2)(b).

Condition of Employment

  • Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier.
  • Completes a driver’s abstract and submits a complete driving record issued by the Department of Licensing that verifies compliance with WAC 180-20.
  • Completes a criminal background check.
  • Adhere to district policies concerning employment
