Role Summary:


The Research Scientist - Nuclear Materials Scientist will be responsible for technical direction and research execution related to work in new alloy design, mechanical property evaluation, irradiation effects, root cause analysis for a manufacturing improvement especially related to nuclear applications. Your primary responsibility in this job will be to provide technical leadership in projects focusing on material discoveries, microstructure, processing and performance relationships. Essential Responsibilities:


As a Research Scientist – Nuclear Materials Scientist, you will:

  • Conduct research in an interdisciplinary team environment involving new alloy design, property optimization, mechanical property evaluation, irradiation effects on materials, and root cause analysis with focus on nuclear applications and high temperature structural application for Power generation industries.

  • Share in the authorship of program proposals to external agencies and participate in the execution of government contracts.

  • Work across organizations, including interfacing with external agencies, GE businesses and universities on technical approach and execution.

  • Share project progress internally and externally through oral presentations and written reports.

  • Foster a multidisciplinary and inclusive team environment

  • Perform all work in accordance with EHS guidelines.


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • PhD in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field or MS degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a research environment.

  • Experience in the utilization of advanced characterization techniques (i.e. SEM, TEM, XRD), to understand the structure, processing and performance relationships of metallic materials systems.

  • Desire and flexibility to contribute to projects across Materials portfolio with the focus on mechanical property evaluation of various metallic systems, including but not limited to Fe, Ni, Co, Al, and Ti.

  • Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills in a global team environment.

  • Ability to work across all functions/levels as part of a team.

  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals at the Masters level for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in design, processing, and performance evaluation of materials for nuclear applications

  • Experience in designing experiments including the use of machine learning protocol

  • Hands on experience with various mechanical testing techniques such as tensile, creep, fatigue

  • Experience in the use of computational materials science toward industrial research and development projects, including the application of machine learning and AI-based tools to materials-focused outcomes.

  • Strong patent, presentation, and publication record.
