The Rosenthal lab at the MBL has an opening for a full-time Research Assistant I-II (up to 40hrs per week) for the period October 1st, 2022 – Sept 30th, 2023. Higher ranks are possible depending on the applicant’s experience and an extension of up to 2 years is possible, based on job performance. This position is an excellent opportunity for those interested in the intersection of cutting-edge genome engineering/molecular biology and cephalopods. The MBL offers unique opportunities for cephalopod research because of its one-of-a-kind cephalopod program which offers life-cycle culture of several species and is actively developing genetically tractable models.
The main responsibilities of the position will be to support the lab’s efforts in cephalopod research and RNA editing research. This will include studies on the environmental regulation of RNA editing, and the production of gene knockout and transgenic squid lines. Work related to RNA editing will involve culturing animals under different environmental conditions and then examining RNA editing patterns by standard and next-generation DNA sequencing. Work will also include the selection of effective guide RNAs for directed RNA editing systems. Work on producing genetically manipulated cephalopods will entail the collection and microinjection of embryos with CRISPR-Cas9, transposases and other reagents, and the care, maintenance, genotyping and crossing of injected animals in order to create defined lines.
Additional Details:
All duties are supported by grants from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Duties will also include the maintenance of equipment and reagent stocks within the Rosenthal Lab. The successful candidate will be detail oriented and keep meticulous records of their work.
