Desert Regional Medical Center is a 385-bed acute-care hospital classified as a stroke receiving center and level 2 trauma facility with an innovative, patient centered and evidence-based Rehabilitation Services Department. Our compassionate team provides a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services, including acute care rehabilitation, joint replacement & spinal surgery, neurosurgery, ICU, Telemetry, step-down care, skilled nursing, as well as outpatient therapy, hand and lymphedema clinics.
GENERAL DUTIES:
Considered a specialized position. Requires a specialized body of knowledge to compile, code, and log patient statistics for trauma registry. Access to demographic information and limited patient health information related to job function.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Trauma Registrar for Desert Regional Medical Center will work on-site in Palm Springs, CA and provide primary support to the Trauma Program Manager. The Trauma Registrar will ensure the timely retrieval and accurate input of data into applicable systems, including verification of data collected as required for a Level 1 trauma center. The Trauma Registrar will identify all patients for entry into the trauma registry, abstract data from the medical record, and enter information into the trauma registry database. Accurately assigns injury, diagnostic, procedure, and complication codes.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC DUTIES:

- Collects required information for all injured trauma victims meeting inclusion criteria by reviewing multiple sources including medical records, EMS records, and various hospital software programs.
- Apply specialized, clinical knowledge to categorize, code, summarize, interpret and calculate registry/case information from patient medical records.
- Uses scaling and scoring tools such as current International Classification of Disease Codes (ICD-10), National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) Data Dictionary, the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) developed by the Advancement of Automotive Medicine (AAAM), and Injury Severity Score (ISS), benchmarking and accreditation.
- Ensures the hospital remains compliant with all applicable standards as they relate to the County and State Registry, American College of Surgeons, National Trauma Data Bank, Trauma Quality Improvement Program (TQIP) and trauma center designation and verification.
- Develops and produces timely information/reports as requested and contributes to timely data submission to local, state, and national agencies to ensure verification and designation statuses are maintained.
- Works as an integral part of the trauma quality and performance improvement program by contributing to identification of opportunities for improvement and/or areas of concern commensurate with the level of training/knowledge/experience.
- Consistently compiles, collates, and/or assembles documents, helicopter logs, reports and related materials to assist in prompt disbursement of information to appropriate internal/external individuals and/or organizations.
- Works independently under limited supervision ensuring records are closed within 60 days of discharge
- Actively participates in Trauma Registry continuing education
- Maintains a high degree of responsibility in keeping PHI secure and confidential
Required:
GED/High school Diploma
Direct Trauma Registry abstraction experience
Ability to maintain a work pace appropriate to the workload
Completion of medical terminology course.
Current Certificate AAAM AIS course
Certificate from ATS Trauma Registry Course
ICD-10 Course Certificate dated within the last 5 years
Demonstrates excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred:
Current CAISS Certification (Certified Abbreviated Injury Scale Specialist)
Exposure to multiple patient medical record systems and clinical databases (Cerner Preferred)
Three years’ related experience in Trauma, Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit
Intermediate proficiency with MS Office (Microsoft Excel)
Pay range: $19.7 Minimum - $23.02 Maximum an hour
Individual wages are determined based upon a number of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications and experience.
