Position Overview

Under general supervision, oversees and participates in all aspects of the maintenance/preservation programs for over 270 acres, 5 buildings, 1 historic fort, 1 historic home, and numerous public use areas at Ft. Kaskaskia/ Pierre Menard Home Historic Site; plans and coordinates the care, maintenance and improvement of the site's grounds, camp grounds, and structures; assures safety and security of the site; prepares related reports; functionally supervises subordinates engaged in unskilled, and semi-skilled maintenance activities.

Job Responsibilities

1. Under general supervision, oversees and participates in the maintenance and repair of the Ft. Kaskaskia and Pierre Menard Home grounds, trails, walks, pathways, campgrounds, roads, recreational areas, structures, and buildings:

  • Operates motor vehicles, equipment and machinery.
  • Stands, walks, climb stairs and ladders, stoops, kneels, lifts and uses shovel and other hand tools in order to carry out grounds/building maintenance and repair functions.
  • Lifts heavy objects which may weigh up to seventy pounds.
  • Maintains/repairs day use equipment, signs, and interpretive materials.
  • Makes minor plumbing and electrical repairs.
  • Cleans, services, paints and makes minor repairs to machinery, vehicles and buildings.
  • Coordinates water and sewage treatment operations.
  • Applies herbicides and pesticides throughout the sites .


2. Serves as working supervisor:

  • Assigns and reviews work.
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
  • Counsels staff regarding work performance.
  • Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
  • Establishes annual goals and objectives.
  • Approves time off.
  • Prepares and signs performance evaluations.


3. Visually observes and assures safety and security of the site, site property, employees and visiting public through routine inspections and repairs:

  • Directs traffic, communicates verbally with visitors and advises site users of rules and regulations.
  • Notifies appropriate authorities in the event of emergencies, disturbances, or criminal activities.


4. Plans and performs basic carpentry and masonry skills in the maintenance, construction or alteration and preservation of historic buildings and structures:

  • Plans and coordinates all maintenance and structural displays and needs for historic re-enactments and special events at the site.


5. Prepares reports, schedules and records such as maintenance schedules, vehicle maintenance reports, attendance records, personnel reports and cyclical maintenance plans for equipment and operations. Performs annual personal property and artifact inventories and cares for both.


6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires education and experience equivalent to an associate degree with courses in life sciences or parks and recreation. (Note: Experience may be substituted for some education, but completion of high school or possession of G.E.D certificate is a minimum educational requirement.)
  • Requires one (1) year of maintenance or interpretive experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • One (1) year of working knowledge of outdoor recreational and natural program administration.
  • Two (2) years of experience preparing and maintaining operating records and reports.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of tools and equipment used in the performance of non-skill and semiskilled maintenance.
  • Two (2) years of working knowledge of departmental rules and regulations pertaining to outdoor recreational and natural programs.
  • Two (2) years of experience in the ability to provide information, direction, assistance to sports enthusiast and the general public.
  • Two(2) years of experience in assigning, reviewing and controlling the work of subordinate staff.

  • Ability to withstand exposure to the elements on a year round basis.
