Radio Maintenance Technician II, Ranger Services Job at DCR - Urban Parks & Recreation
The Department of Conservation and Recreation manages one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation, protects and enhances natural resources and outdoor recreational opportunities throughout Massachusetts. The DCR system includes over 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, golf courses, trails, and parkways.
The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Radio Technician II.
Duties:
- Install mobile 2-way radios into agency vehicles, including cars, vans, pick-up trucks, and SUVs. Un-install 2-way mobile radios and manage inventory.
- Provide access to and monitor vendors working at DCR telecommunications sites located across the Commonwealth. Conduct site visits and manage inventories as needed.
- Maintain stock of 2-way radio accessories, coordinating issuance to DCR facilities across the Commonwealth.
- Troubleshoot 2-way radio issues, diagnose faults, and assist with repairs or reprogramming as necessary.
- Assist with radio system troubleshooting and monitoring.
- Provide needs assessments, set-up temporary 2-way radio communications for staff during planned events and emergency incidents. Provide ongoing technical support and troubleshooting during these events.
- Install low building mounted antennas and associated grounding and cables.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to work on complex technical radio communications issues and deal with multiple problem situations that may arise.
- Possess excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the methods and techniques of 2-way radio and allied equipment installation, operation, and technical support.
- National Incident Management System Communication Technician (COMT) training.
- Demonstrate proficiencies in the use of computer applications specifically used for programming 2-way radios.
- FCC Technician Class or higher radio operator’s license.
LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must be in possession of a current Motor Vehicle Operator's License valid in Massachusetts
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time or equivalent part-time, technical experience in the repair of radio communications equipment, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school above the high school level with a major in radio, radio and television or electronics may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
II. An Associate's or higher degree with a major in electronics or electronics engineering may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.*
- Education toward such a diploma, certificate or degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
NOTE: Educational substitutions will only be permitted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
Special Requirements:
1. Possession of a current and valid First or Second Class Radiotelephone Operator's License issued by the Federal Communications Commission.
2. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License may be required.
