Public Defender Division Seeking Investigator | Operation Lone Star Project Job at Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, Inc. (TRLA)
Texas RioGrande Legal Aid (TRLA) has openings for Investigators to join the public defender division of the Operation Lone Star Project who will support TRLA’s efforts defending clients charged under Operation Lone Star. Operation Lone Star is a state initiative that attempts to militarize the border, criminalize seeking asylum, and create a separate and unequal criminal justice system targeting migrants.
The primary duties and activities of a Public Defender Investigator include the:
- Locate and interview victims, witnesses, and law enforcement personnel; draft statements, maintain interview notes;
- interview clients, many of which are incarcerated, to assist with determining eligibility, immigration status, and potential conflicts of interest; determine facts, gather contact information, obtain witness identities, evaluate mental health status, and assess facts regarding bail;
- Locate, gather, and analyze records, reports and documents, scan documents into case management system; serve subpoenas;
- Visit and recreate crime scenes by measuring, photographing, and sketching;
- Travel to various Texas counties including frequent visits to the prison units currently housing clients;
- Prepare written reports;
- Testify in court;
- Notarize legal documents;
- Maintain accurate and complete client files and administrative records, including data entry into case management system;
- Prepare administrative reports required by TRLA; and
- Any other duties required by the management of the team.
Qualifications:
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Car, driver’s license, and automobile insurance
- Resourcefulness, creativity, initiative and drive, tact, and discretion
- Knowledge of computer applications and the ability to learn new technology and work remotely.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic working knowledge of social work and public benefits programs.
- Experience working in a legal office or with indigent client populations.
- Experience with either law enforcement, a defense law firm, or journalism.
