POSITION: Counselor/Dean of Students

REPORTS TO: Principal

LOCATION: Paschal Sherman Indian School, Omak, WA

Basic Functions: Incumbent is to coordinate the management of student behavior. This included the implementation of Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS). The Second Steps Curriculum, organizing students' incentive programs, and activities such as assemblies. The Dean of Students will also administer the student attendance and discipline programs as outline in the Plan of Operations and Student/Parent Handbook. This person will also manage the operations of the school in the absence of the principal.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

  • Requires an Masters Degree, current Washington State Teaching Certificate and/or Washington State E.S.A Counseling Certification. A current Emergency Counseling Certificate issued by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction will be accepted.
  • Requires a First Aid/CPR certificate or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment and maintain for the duration of employment.
  • Requires a valid Washington State Drivers' License and must be eligible for the Tribes' vehicle insurance.
  • Requires proof of Degree, Transcripts, and three written letters of recommendation submitted with application.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires ability to adhere to strict confidentiality.
  • Requires excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Requires ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituencies including students, parents, community members, and staff.
  • Requires knowledge and experience in preparing students for standardized assessments.
  • Requires willingness to pursue additional education and/or training.
  • Requires leadership skills that include maturity, confidence, wisdom and collaborative skills necessary to garner the trust and confidence of board members, faculty, staff, students, parents, and others within the school and community.
  • Requires a high level of integrity and work ethic and ability to inspire through example.
  • Requires promoting consistent standards of excellence in teaching and learning throughout the school.
  • Requires ability to build consensus yet act decisively when necessary to ensure resolution of issues.
  • Requires analytical and creative problem solving skills in negotiation that can proactively initiate and implement change.
  • Requires entrepreneurial leadership skills as well as good judgement, maturity, and sense of humor to allow for maintaining perspective and a sense of balance.
  • Requires ability to be a hard worker and have the drive and stamina to handle extended work days and the intensity to operate a high performing private school.

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.


TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.


If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
