Probation Officer Job at Virginia Dept of Juvenile Justice
Incumbent ensures the protection of the citizens of the Commonwealth by assisting the Court in holding juveniles accountable for their actions and serves as an agent for the Court Service Unit during legal proceedings, law enforcement matters, school matters, community programs, and Intake. Duties include screening citizen and law enforcement criminal complaints against juveniles and domestic relations matters; diverting matters when appropriate; processing delinquency petitions; providing supportive counseling; completing assessments; writing court reports including dispositional recommendations; providing supervision to delinquent youth; providing community linkages and special program services to youth and families; establishing and maintaining positive relationships with law enforcement and community partners in keeping with the Code of Virginia, Court Service Unit minimum standards, and state and local directives. Position also provides after hours, on-call intake services on a rotating basis. The position is located in the branch office in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge and/ or experience of the criminal justice system to include court proceedings
- Ability to interpret and apply laws, regulations, guidelines and procedures
- Knowledge of interviewing and counseling techniques
- Knowledge and ability to assess needs and to develop case plans
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing including the creation of written reports
- Knowledge and ability to identify community resources and human service agencies to support families.
- Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Word
- A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain it by the date of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
- Related degree from an accredited college or university in social work, criminal justice, psychology, sociology, or other human service fields or equivalent related experience
- Some experience working with juveniles and their families
- Experience with community programming
