Pediatric Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Job at Brown Emergency Medicine
Brown Emergency Medicine (Brown EM) is the academic emergency medicine physician practice plan of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Brown EM provides emergency department staffing for Rhode Island hospital, the only Level I trauma center in this region; Hasbro Children's Hospital, Rhode Island's only children's specialty hospital; The Miriam Hospital, a leading community teaching hospital and Newport Hospital, a community Magnet Hospital, Brown EM member physicians and providers treat over 250,000 patients per year at our four clinical sites, drawing patients from Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Brown EM is looking for a Pediatric Advanced Practice Provider (nurse practitioner or physician assistant) who is responsible for practicing emergency medicine in the Hasbro Children's Hospital Emergency Department (HCHED). The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) will assume advanced practice care of specific patients under direction of the physician. The APP will follow established nursing/physician assistant standards, procedures, and practices, and give specific patient care directions to nursing and other staff.
Primary responsibilities are as follows:
- Confer with physician(s) concerning assigned patients and evaluations
- Receive assigned patients and orient them to hospital/unit environment
- Instruct patients and families and answer questions
- Provide diagnostic and assessment services in the pediatric emergency department
- Secure a medical history from patient and/or family, record findings, and critically evaluate them
- Perform a complete in-depth physical examination
- Use assessment techniques including observation, inspection, auscultation, percussion, palpation, and oto-ophthalmic examinations when appropriate
- Confer with other health care providers to prepare a comprehensive patient care plan
- Identify and manage pediatric medical complaints
- Provide within established protocols and under supervision of physician, treatment for pediatric medical complaints and minor surgical/orthopedic complaints
- Perform minor procedures including suturing, splinting, as well as procedural sedation under the supervision of a physician
- Provide surveillance of medical regimens for chronically ill persons
- Adjust regimens within established protocols and recognize when to refer patient to a physician for assessment and advice
- Give direct physical and psychological care in emergencies, as well as in the presence of illness or disability in order to maintain live, provide comfort, and reduce stress
- Act as a coordinator for the admission and discharge of assigned patients
- Collaboratively work with other health agencies and families of patients in the physical and emotional transitions of admission, care, and discharge
- Comply with established advanced practice nursing/physician standards
- Implement and maintain established department/unit/hospital policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control
- Maintain patient rights and confidentiality of patient information and abide by established communications code
- Provide preventive health care services to long-term patients
- Arrange consultations and referrals
The qualifications for this job are as follows:
- Master's degree in either a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) program
- Completion of an accredited program for Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants including preceptorship
- Minimum of 1-2 years' experience preferably in an emergency department
- Registration and current NP or PA license
- Sufficient previous experience, preferably in a pediatric practice or ED
- Active clinical privileges in Emergency Medicine at Hasbro Children's Hospital
- Demonstrates ethical conduct, professionalism, interpersonal skills, and management abilities to effectively direct support staff
Successful candidate must submit to a background release form, demonstrate proof of being free from disqualifying information and must possess a driver's license and access to an insured vehicle as some transportation may be required.
