POSITION: Natural Resource Technician I/II

SALARY: Tech I: $15.78 - 18.30 Tech II: $18.52 - 21.24

REPORTS TO: Biologist II/Senior

LOCATION: Spokane, WA

Basic Functions:

Natural Resource Technician I is the first level in the technician series requiring a High School Diploma or General Educational Diploma (GED) and a satisfactory work history. The position will be performing White Sturgeon research surveys as a team member on a research boat while following protocols for the collection of biological data. The Technician I will assist with maintaining, preparing and fabricating gear for field work. The position will also have many opportunities to increase knowledge and skills through training and workshops that are available as well as on-the-job training.

Natural Resource Technician II is the second level in the technician series. Technician II requires a High School education AND 36 months of progressively responsible experience at the Technician I level. Experience includes accurate collection of data and biological samples. Assisting in fabrication and assembly of new sampling gear. Preparation and use of gear for different sampling events including set-line stock assessment surveys, juvenile gill netting surveys, larval sturgeon collection, marking and transport. General organization and maintenance of project equipment and gear.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Training:

Natural Resource Technician I:

  • High School Diploma or GED and a satisfactory work history.

Natural Resource Technician II:

  • High School Diploma or GED AND 36 months progressively responsible experience equivalent to the Technician I or equivalent level, related to fish, wildlife, natural resource management or other closely related field OR;

  • An Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited college in fish, wildlife, natural resources or other closely related science AND 6 months experience equivalent to the Technician I level.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Technician I:

  • No specific job related knowledge is required at this level, although they must have the ability to complete tasks of the nature of those listed under the subheading “Abilities”.

Technician II:

  • Effectively use personal computers and word processing, spreadsheet, and database software for data entry and web browser for researching sampling equipment.
  • Knowledge of standard fishery techniques.
  • Freshwater fish identification.
  • Use of hand and power tools.
  • Basic sampling gear and equipment maintenance and repair.

Both:

  • Use standard fisheries laboratory and field equipment.

  • Apply standard fisheries related laboratory and field methods to gather data.

  • Communicate effectively with coworkers, crew, and the general public.

  • Organize and prioritize work to achieve results, goals, and objectives on time.

  • Operate equipment safely and efficiently. Demonstrates knowledge and skill of maintaining equipment.

  • Effectively troubleshoots problems with equipment.

  • Understand and follow applicable regulations and standards to maintain a safe work environment.

  • Reminds others of safety practices to minimize the likelihood of accidents.

  • Effectively handle adverse situations, making appropriate decisions, working calmly, and accurately.

  • Must be able to work effectively within a team environment.

  • Must be able to work in a multi-cultural environment.

  • Must maintain an excellent record of attendance.

  • Must be willing and able to work long shifts on a variable schedule, including: nights, early mornings, late evenings, holidays and weekends as the work dictates.

  • Must be willing to travel away from duty station to conduct field work for periods of up to ten consecutive days.

  • Must be in good physical condition and be able to work in inclement weather conditions on a boat at night and during the day.

  • Must be in good physical condition and will be expected to pull, push, or lift heavy objects on a boat in all weather conditions.

  • Must be able to swim.


Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.


TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.


If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
