At a Glance! Lower Columbia College is seeking a dynamic, energetic and creative Microbiology Instructor committed to community college students and their success. This position will be responsible for developing and teaching microbiology courses. We are looking for someone who is collaborative and team-oriented, and also, has strong desire and passion for incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into their teaching.

As full-time faculty, this position will also advise students, participate in curriculum and program development, participate in professional development, engage in assessment activities, attend faculty and committee meetings, and perform other duties as assigned.

The Instructor position is 173 contract days (fall, winter, spring). Courses are delivered through multiple modalities including online, hybrid, and in-person. The salary range is $58,762 to $81,011 based on education and experience. Please note the salary range will be adjusted for the 2023-2024 year to reflect the legislatively funded cost-of-living increase. The Microbiology Instructor reports to the Dean of Instructional Programs.

Among other duties. this Instructor will have the opportunity to:

  • Impart expertise, enthusiasm, and creativity in the instruction of biology to a diverse student population with various learning styles and abilities.
  • Effectively prepare and present course content, drawing upon disciplinary knowledge, skills, theories, issues, research, and applications to design engaging and effective learning experiences.
  • Analyze course assessments, evaluations and data and engage in continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrate multicultural competence, including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations, and create an educational environment that affirms commitment to equity and diversity.
  • Provide quality instruction in various settings (classroom, online) adapting to a variety of teaching/learning situations while maintaining an effective learning environment.
  • Competently incorporate instructional technologies in course delivery.
  • Seek and promote opportunities for student learning and critical thinking.
  • Assess, evaluate and document student learning and achievement of course outcomes.
  • Provide individualized support to promote student success.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to students in a timely manner, including the grading of assignments.
  • Maintain currency of course content and materials, including course syllabi.
  • Provide academic and career advising to students.
  • Establish and maintain office hours; be available for student consultation.
  • Perform ongoing student, program and college assessment activities, including analysis of course assessments, evaluations, and data to engage in continuous improvement to enhance student success, retention, and completion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Microbiology/biology or related field of study from an accredited institution
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Experience using technology (i.e. MS Office Suite, Google, video conferencing)
  • Success in being a collaborative and respectful team member

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in curriculum development and assessment
  • Experience teaching adults at the college level, preferably in multiple modalities such as online and face-to-face
  • Demonstrated ability to serve the needs of students who represent a broad spectrum of ages, abilities, ethnicity, education and cultural background
  • Professional practice/work-experience in biology/microbiology or closely related field
  • Experience teaching microbiology at the college level
  • Expertise using a Learning Management System such as Canvas and using technology to enhance student learning

Employees participate in either the State Board Retirement Plan administered through TIAA-CREF or PERS Plan 3 administered through the Department of Retirement Systems. Both plans are matched by LCC. There are also two supplemental tax-deferred retirement plans you can elect to participate in: the State Board Voluntary Investment Program and the Washington State Deferred Compensation Program.

Our teachers are trained in the Early Childhood Education field.
