This is a remote position where the ideal candidate would be located in South Central Pennsylvania or in Northern Maryland, but exceptional candidates located outside of the service area may be considered.

Occasional travel required within WellSpan's geographic footprint.


General Summary:

The Media Relations Manager is a public relations professional who advances WellSpan Health’s image and reputation as a leading health care provider through strategic media outreach and response.

The Media Relations Manager works to effectively position WellSpan’s care, experts, services and impact among key stakeholders and helps to mitigate reputational risk through effective management of media inquiries.

The Media Relations Manager proactively identifies communication opportunities that showcase and differentiate WellSpan’s services, programs and people and recommends strategies, responses and tactics to secure coverage in traditional, digital and other media. The Media Relations Manager contributes to an integrated, collaborative, data-driven Communications team that is known for high reliability and excellence in execution.

The role reports to the Senior Manager of Media Relations and works closely and collaboratively with the Director of Communications.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are essential job accountabilities:

  • Identifies media opportunities highlighting WellSpan’s mission, vision, values, clinical excellence, innovation and community impact, and other strategic priorities.
  • Develops and executes integrated media relations plans designed to secure coverage.
  • Develops and cultivates positive working relationships with local, regional, national and trade reporters.
  • Acts as part of a team that manages media inquiries fielding local, regional, national and trade outlet requests in a timely manner, working against short deadlines or after hours at times.
  • Serves as spokesperson for the organization as needed.
  • Works collaboratively with the Communications team and health system leaders to understand priorities and propose, develop and implement media relations strategies to support annual plans.
  • Identifies and provides media training to subject matter experts.
  • Coordinates, schedules and facilitates interviews between the media and subject matter experts.
  • Develops, edits and executes media relations activities including but not limited to news releases, media responses, pitches, op-eds, story placement strategies, talking points, scripts, newsletters, social media posts related to media coverage, etc.
  • Tracks metrics and identifies trends, along with recommendations for increasing WellSpan’s share of voice and reach.
  • Manages news conferences, media availabilities and other related events.
  • Contributes to daily, monthly, quarterly and annual reporting on media relations results.
  • Supports media inquiries after hours and on weekends when necessary. May require being available for on-call coverage. Supports crisis and disaster plans as needed.
  • Arranges photography and videography for media-related system activities.
  • Escorts media on WellSpan properties when needed.
  • Obtains appropriate consent forms from interviewees and maintains compliance with HIPPA.

Plans and coordinates meetings to ensure media relations designated objectives are met


Qualifications:


Minimum Education

Bachelor's Degree


Minimum Experience

3 - 5 years of Media Relations experience

Experience in successfully pitching and securing media in trade publications (Preferred)

Background in Communications, Journalism or Public Relations, preferably with experience in a large, complex healthcare organization

Strong background in Media or Media Relations

Proven ability to apply communications strategies to high-level organizational priorities;

Critical thinking, superior journalistic writing and solid interpersonal skills.
