GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

Assumes primary responsibility for the maintenance and repair of the automotive, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment utilized for the maintenance of district schools. Maintain electrical utilities, fixtures, services, lights, fire alarm systems, etc. on an on-going basis in a public school building or surrounding grounds. May provide repairs to school property such as buildings, grounds or equipment, generally included in the building trades, such as carpenters, roofers, glaziers, painters, plumbers, masons and electricians.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

• To repair automotive equipment.
• Implements and perform the vehicle preventative maintenance program.
• Repair shop and custodial equipment.
• To organize and be responsible for the daily operation of the repair shop as directed.
• To assist and advise other mechanics as needed.
• To perform tasks such as repairing or installing piping, hardware and wood products.
• To make necessary repairs to mechanical, automotive and heating equipment.
• Landscaping repairs and installations (i.e. paving, walks, shrubs, sidewalks and driveways, etc.).
• To operate mowing and snow removal equipment.
• To make necessary repairs to pneumatic, electrical heating systems found in school facilities.
• To work in various trades as necessary.
• Requisition supplies through a foreman.
• Interdepartmental communication and maintenance of files and records as required.
• Maintain all applicable safety and/or code requirements as mandated.
• RI State certification required
• Responsible for snow removal outside of regular work hours.
• Other duties as required by the department and/or supervisor.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A working knowledge of automotive, mechanical hydraulic and pneumatic equipment; must have a thorough knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in public schools; must possess a minimum of Core certifications from a major US vehicle manufacturer or ASE, must be a certified RI vehicle inspector and a valid Rhode Island driver’s license; must have a thorough knowledge of asbestos, certificate preferred; must be able to work independently; the ability to readily understand and carry out directions, oral, diagram and in written form; the ability to read and work from electrical wiring diagrams and blueprints; creative thinking and problem solving skills necessary; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing; the ability to develop an effective working relationship with staff, students and the public; demonstrated manual dexterity; must be able to apply the knowledge in order to make repairs and run the shop with minimum supervision and the ability to perform duties with an awareness of all school department requirements and policies.

EDUCATION:

Such as may be gained through graduation from a senior high school or equivalent (GED), supplemented by vocational or trade school training or military background preferred. Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a mechanic.
