We are currently seeking an experienced Managing Editor to join their team! The Managing Editor oversees the issue production process while ensuring the quality of content. He or she demonstrates expert editorial knowledge and skill sets in overseeing projects and composing and editing flawless copy with minimal or no supervision.
The Managing Editor is responsible for schedule generation and keeping publications on track for timely delivery. He or she oversees in-house content movement among editors and through to Art/Production, as well as ensuring quality of content, edits, and adherence to AMA and House styles. These style guides are maintained by the Managing Editor under the oversight of the Editor-in-Chief. Along with or in lieu of, the Managing Editor can provide final edits and approve deployments.
The Managing Editor monitors and reviews the progress of editorial staff below the Senior Editor level, providing regular feedback to staff and updates to the Editor-in-Chief, as well as overseeing the Annual Reviews of these employees along with the Editor-in-Chief.
What a day in the life of a Managing Editor looks like:
Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
- Creates and maintains annual and monthly production schedules
- Plans content and maintains issue run-up/tracker
- Writes and posts news stories to sites via content management system
- Performs first and second edits of articles and supplemental materials
- Experience writing content for videos and podcasts preferred
- Creates and maintains House style guide
- Ensures editorial accuracy and quality of publications, overseeing copyediting and proofreading
- Handles project management from article acquisition through printing
- Collaborates with EIC to manage unsolicited manuscripts
- Contributes to issue production using checklists, including final fit and to printer stages
- Performs bluelines check and approval
- Daily communications with authors/clients/colleagues via telephone, email, and in-person
- Takes on large-scale tasks as needed
- Guides, mentors, and reviews junior staff in day-to-day activity
- Contributes to overall process improvement initiatives
- Complies with the U.S. Copyright Act and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
What we expect from qualified candidates:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, journalism, communications, or related field
- 7 or more years of substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading, requiring little or no supervision
- 2 or more years of management experience
- Excellent composition and writing skills
- Strong command of the English language, including grammar and syntax
- Detailed knowledge of AMA style
- Comfortable leading discussions with authors and industry members
- Thorough knowledge of publishing (all platforms)
- Ability to establish and oversee deadlines
- Thorough knowledge of Word, Excel, InDesign (or other typesetting program), and web publishing platforms
- Knowledge of the dermatology an aesthetics fields preferred
