Position and Job Description

Job Title: Maintenance Supervisor Salary: $60,000 - $75,000 DOE

Reports to: Port Manager

Principal Purpose of Job: Directs and is responsible for the overall maintenance activities for the Port of Brownsville. The Maintenance Supervisor shall ensure the maintenance standards listed in this document are attained and that these levels of maintenance are sustained.

Work Environment: Work is primarily performed indoors in offices or meeting rooms. Some work is performed outdoors at the marina with exposure to all the weather conditions and hazards of these sites. Evening meetings may be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Prepare a weekly work agenda to include specific work items to be completed during the coming week to be submitted to the Port Manager each Monday morning.
  • This position is responsible to assign daily work functions to each maintenance employee, to maximize productivity and to ensure that all work is performed safely.
  • The Maintenance Supervisor shall make certain that the material necessary to accomplish the daily maintenance activities is on hand at the Port shop prior to the start of each workday. Material shall be acquired utilizing approved internal spending controls.
  • The Maintenance Supervisor shall appoint a safety officer from the maintenance staff whose term will last one year and who will ensure that all conditions of the Port of Brownsville safety policy are met including but not limited to regular safety meetings and training. The regular safety meeting schedule will be coordinated with the Port office and will be held at the Port office to include all Port staff.
  • Some of the capital projects may be performed by force account labor subject to manpower availability, machinery and applicable skills and will necessitate coordination with the Project Manager.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate completion of all timesheets and submitting them to the, Port Manager.
  • Complete and coordinate an annual review of each Maintenance Employee and maintain the confidentiality of all performance reviews.
  • Participate in the preparation of the maintenance portion of the annual operating budget by assisting in needs/costs development.
  • Will be expected to operate within the approved spending levels utilizing the internal controls for purchasing as they apply.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of all Port owned vehicles, power equipment and tools. Maintenance logs will be kept on all vehicles and motorized equipment. Inventory levels shall be kept on all tools and equipment.
  • Maintain environmental compliance through field verification.
  • Facilitate spill response procedures.
  • Responds to alarms and emergencies as may be necessary regardless of hour. Update the call out log as soon as practical following any afterhours calls out.
  • Acts as the Port of Brownsville Harbor Master.
  • Maintains an open line of communication with all Port staff. Reports and communicates daily with the Port Manager.
  • Provides changes or additions to as-built information to staff responsible for maintaining continuing property records.
  • Communicate daily with the Port Manager any concerns related to safety, security, etc.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty above satisfactorily.

Education and/or experience: High School Diploma or GED required

Skills: Proven leadership and the skills to instruct other members of the Maintenance staff to proficiently perform work beyond their skill level.

  • Quality control is essential.
  • Fosters and maintains a professional image with customers and public, projecting a positive, confident, cooperative and disciplined attitude.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations, Professional Knowledge:

  • Current Washington Driver’s License. A current two-year drivers abstract may be required if interviewed.
  • Be capable of attaining all necessary certifications required to perform these environmental duties.
  • Acquire and maintain any licenses for work over/on the water in Port equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment can be described as outdoors, in all weather conditions. Work requires climbing and use of protective clothing, climbing harness, boots goggles and respirators in compliance with the state and the Port’s safety policy.
