If so, the Williamsburg Residency is currently seeking qualified candidates for Maintenance Operator positions within the Residency at Croaker, Williamsburg, Seaford, and Surry Area Headquarters ( AHQ ). Positions are available throughout the Williamsburg area and are conveniently located in James City, York, and Surry counties and near King William, King and Queen, New Kent, West Point, Newport News, and sections of Hampton.
There are open positions at the Croaker AHQ and the Williamsburg AHQ .
Maintenance Operators set up work zones, cut brush, clean ditches and pipes, repair roadways, plow snow, and perform preventive maintenance and on equipment and power tools. This position also performs emergency roadway operations as an essential employee during snow/severe weather and other emergency events. As a VDOT employee, you will receive on-the-job training and other career development opportunities.

Core responsibilities include of the Maintenance Operator position include:
Equipment Operations – Operate light, medium and heavy-duty equipment safely to perform maintenance and construction related work tasks.
Job Safety – Identify workplace safety hazards and make suggestions for improvement. Wear proper personal protection equipment. Maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and procedures (OSHA and VOSHA, etc.). Use equipment properly and safely. Apply MUTCD for detours, lane closures, work zones, etc. Maintain clean, orderly, and safe work environment. Follow VDOT safety regulations and practices.
Emergency Operations – Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other types of emergency operations. Clear roadways of snow, ice and debris, and clean up after accidents. Provide traffic control.
Preventative Maintenance – Perform maintenance repair, replacement and preventive maintenance. Complete pre-trip inspections for any vehicle or equipment operated.
Manual Labor – Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and accomplish objectives. Perform manual labor and other maintenance tasks as needed for project completion.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications for the position include:
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. Ability to operate and maintain equipment comparable to that used in highway maintenance/construction activities.
- The ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- The ability to read and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of handheld and power tools.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- The ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- The ability to work inclement weather, accidents, and emergency/disaster response, etc. during/after normal work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications for the position include:
- Holding a valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.
- Experience performing heavy manual labor and equipment operation such as dump trucks, tractors, loaders, etc.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- Familiarity with methods and materials used in highway maintenance.
- Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
- High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.
- Flagging certification
- CDL Class A with appropriate endorsements. Asphalt, concrete and or excavation experience preferred.
Special Requirements
This position will require:
- A valid driver’s license.
- A fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check.
- A pre-employment physical and drug screen (if applicable).
- The position is deemed essential and will be required to assist in emergency operations. Travel may be required.
- This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense.
