About our opportunity:
The Department of Public Works is looking to hire a full-time Laborer position within the Stormwater Services Division. This position is responsible for assisting the operator of the vac-con truck in the day to day cleaning of the Stormwater catch basins, pipes and culverts within the street rights of way. Assist the driver with lifting street drain covers and cleaning and flushing drains. This position will also assist in other emergency events such as snow and ice removal.

Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM (4-Day Work Week) 40 hours per week.

Salary Range: $17.70 - $22.73


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Duties assigned to employees in this class vary according to the needs of the department/division to which assigned.
  • Hand and/or power tools are used in construction and/or maintenance activities.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels, greasing joints; fuels equipment.
  • Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs; assists in repair work.
  • Picks up debris.
  • Loads and unloads material on and off of trucks.
  • Maintains activity logs.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Cleans pipe of debris and excess dirt.
  • Positions signs, marking cones, flags, etc., to identify work areas.
  • Operates two-way radio to communicate with central office and/or other work crews.
  • Performs related work as required.

Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least one (1) year of maintenance, construction or building trades experience.
  • Valid driver's license.
Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of hand and power tools.
  • General knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of heavy motorized equipment.
  • General knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in basic construction and maintenance operations, including grounds maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and the proper safety precautions for general maintenance and construction work.
  • Skill in the use of various power and hand tools.
  • Some knowledge of physical hazards and the proper safety precautions for general maintenance and construction work.
  • Ability to make minor repairs and operating adjustments to assigned equipment.
  • Ability to maintain simple records and logs.
  • Ability to perform strenuous work under varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
