Laboratory Technician Job at WSSC Water
The
Laboratory Technician performs a series of general duties which span across a multiple-step process, beginning with the collection of samples, sample log-in, and concluding with the entry and approval of the results of a series of routine chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses in the appropriate database.
Essential Functions
- Operates basic to specialized field laboratory instruments such as pH, conductivity, turbidity etc.
- Performs physical collection of samples in accordance with the Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, NPDES, Industrial Discharge Control, and all other applicable local, state or federal environmental regulations
- Inspects customer collected samples to ensure appropriate procedures have been followed with regard to the collection and the labeling of samples
- Maintains chain of custody throughout the collection process
- Performs a variety of chemical, physical and microbiological analyses on aqueous and non-aqueous samples including, but not limited to: color, odor, total hardness, conductivity, turbidity, pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, solids, alkalinity, fluoride, chlorine in accordance with standard operating procedures and quality control requirements
- Utilizes specific instrumentation or computer software to complete analysis
- Reviews, approves, and enters all resulting data into the LIMS system and all other appropriate databases
- Prepares necessary standards and reagents for chemical, physical, and microbiological analyses in accordance with standard operating procedures and quality control requirements
- Maintains, cleans, and prepares glassware and other laboratory appliances for use in various analytical procedures
- Maintains all other required analytical, quality control, and maintenance records
- Produces acceptable data according to federal and state regulations (Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water Acts) and requirements
- Establishes daily routine necessary to meet work deadlines
- Maintains analytical, quality control, and maintenance records according to Laboratory QA Manual and SOPs
- Maintaining field water quality panels and fish tanks
Other Functions
- Aids other laboratory team members in keeping the laboratory area safe, neat, and clean.
- Cross trains other team members as needed.
- Attends training when requested.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Environment And Physical Demands
- Requires periods of repetitive movements
- Requires the safe handling of hazardous materials
- Will be exposed to chemicals, fumes, odors, and toxic materials
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Advanced knowledge of principles, terminology, practices, techniques, and instrumentation pertaining to physical, chemical, and microbiological analyses
- Knowledge of the operation and care of standard field testing equipment such as pH meters, colorimeter, Fluoride and other related apparatus
- Working knowledge of theories and practices in the fields of chemistry, microbiology, or biochemistry
- Knowledge of GLP
- Knowledge of OSHA safe work requirements and practices, including MDS and personal protective equipment
- Superior customer service skills
- Manual dexterity and precision are also required in the use of laboratory equipment and tools and the completion of the analysis process
- Ability to interpret, compute, and maintain accurate, written records of analytical results
- Ability to use basic laboratory instruments, devices, equipment, and tools used in the physical, chemical and microbiological analysis, including the use of the computer and all related computer software
- Ability to effectively prioritize work and manage time in order to meet deadlines
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Ability to establish harmonious and effective working relationships
- Ability to accurately perform basic field tests required for a water utility
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to perform basic mathematical operations such as percentages, ratios, proportions and conversions
- Ability to operate communication systems (e.g. portable radios, cell phones, etc.)
Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
- Associate’s degree in Chemistry, Physics, or Life Sciences
- 2+ years experience as a laboratory technician
OR
- High School diploma (or equivalent)
- 4+ years experience as a laboratory technician
