Job Title: Journeyman Electrician
Reports To: Master Electrician
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary:
Seeking an experienced professional to undertake the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical systems in residential and commercial spaces. Be able to test, troubleshoot, and replace electrical components to ensure systems function safely and efficiently. Must have the experience and willingness to train and mentor apprentice electricians working under you.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Install electrical systems and equipment such as switch gears, circuit breakers, switches, outlets, lighting fixtures, including additional wiring as needed.
- Select the most appropriate course of action, given project restrictions.
- Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
- Monitor performance of installed electrical equipment for hazards, performing maintenance by replacing worn out parts or entire units as needed.
- Maintain electrical records by documenting all work performed on equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot electrical problems such as short circuits or faulty wiring in light fixtures or power outlets, tracing electrical problems to their source using meters and other diagnostic equipment completing the repair work.
- Understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
- Knowledge of secondary electrical systems, including planning and designing additions or modifications on secondary circuits.
- Obtain any parts, equipment, tools, and or materials for the project.
- Ensuring that all electrical components meet safety codes and standards, including National Electric Code (NEC), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), or National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) guidelines.
- Ability to lead, train, and oversee the work of an apprentice, teaching these novice electricians the correct methods, techniques and practices, relevant codes, and pertinent regulations.
- Work on a team and communicate well with others, liaising with clients, vendors, and other electricians.
- Read/interpret plans, blueprints, schematics, and other diagrams.
- Use project management software.
- Provide assistance during emergencies.
- May perform work of lower-level electricians.
Position Requirements:
- A valid driver license.
- Detail oriented, reliable and self-motivated.
- Have a relevant South Dakota state license.
- Excellent written, verbal, and telephonic communication skills.
- Know OSHA safety guidelines and practices.
- Patience when teaching apprentices.
- Be able to meet the physical requirements of the job including: Working in confined spaces, heavy physical work; heavy lifting, laying wire, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to or in excess of 75 pounds.
- Able to work safely from various heights off ladders, scaffolds, aerial lifts, and other safe work platforms and areas.
- Be able to complete a full days worth of work involving one or more of the following: bending, stooping, squatting, crawling, climbing, kneeling, balancing, pushing, pulling, reaching over head, with repetitive use of arms, hands, and fingers.
Education/Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED Equivalent
- Associates Degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school.
- Completion of a relevant apprenticeship.
- At least 5 years experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret construction documents and contracts. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, & customers.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; bend; stoop; squat; crawl; kneel; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Heavy lifting and working in confined spaced will be required at times.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The job is performed outdoors and indoors on construction sites with occasional time spent in an office setting.
SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
Must be aware and conform to all safety requirements when in the building, operating motor vehicles, or in the field performing duties for the company.
