HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR (COMPOST FACILITY)

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs semi-skilled and skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the composting facility, and appurtenances; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

TYPICAL TASKS:

Assists in the operation and maintenance of compost facility;

Works with crew preparing and separating compost rows/piles;

Maintains grounds and similar activities;

Operates trucks, tractors, front end loaders, and other mechanical equipment in connection with the above tasks;

Acts as crew leader when required;

Performs and/or assists in maintenance of compost equipment;

Works weekends and evenings as required;

Assists water and wastewater crews when needed;

Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in the composting operation and maintenance; general knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual tasks involved in the composting operation; general knowledge of the safe use of common hand and power tools; general knowledge and understanding of the importance of safety to the overall success of the Authority (i.e. safety culture awareness) and appreciation for disciplined conduct of operations (work authorization process, stop work authority, etc.); ability to proficiently operate construction type heavy equipment; ability to perform manual and semi-skilled labor for extended periods; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the general public; ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license; ability to obtain SC LLR Environmental Certification Board licensure; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and keep records; ability to work independently and effectively; ability to perform strenuous manual labor under all weather conditions in the field; ability to lift 50 pounds, bend, reach, stand for extended periods of time, climb stairs, ladders, twist, sit, kneel, crawl, squat and walk; ability to drive a vehicle daily; ability to use appropriate safety equipment, follow safe work procedures, understand and comply with Authority policies; and the ability to perform all tasks in a safe manner in accordance with GSWSA’s safety procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a High School Diploma or GED and 2 years of experience in the operation of construction type heavy equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a Class “A” CDL license with tanker and airbrakes endorsements. Hazardous materials endorsement may be required.
