Posting Summary
Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey is seeking a Health Physicist for the Rutgers Environmental Health and Safety Department.

Under the broad technical and administrative supervision of the Director/Radiation Safety Officer, Health Physicist conducts a wide variety of health physics services, including performing routine audits of radioactive materials and their use in laboratories, calibration of laboratory analytical equipment and GM counters, package integrity tests, bioassays, and decommissioning of laboratories. Conducts personnel dosimetry program including the assignment, distribution, collection and documentation of personnel dosimeters. Responsible for the proper disposal of radioactive waste, calibrating dental x-ray units and dose calibrators, and patient monitoring and dose analysis. Assists with implementing laser safety program. Also assists with determining compliance with NRC and NJDEP regulations and orders, as well as policies and procedures established by the Radiation Safety Committee.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Accepts delivery of, inspects, and performs package surveys on all radioactive isotopes prior to transferring to licensees.
  • Implements radiation safety program; performs complete monitoring surveys (wipe tests and ambient surveys), including leak tests of sealed sources; produces summary reports of audits; brings to the attention of the Director/Radiation Safety Officer circumstances that could develop into a widespread internal or external radiological health issue.
  • Conducts routine calibration and documentation of laboratory analytical equipment; calibrates portable radiation survey meters and dose calibrators; assists with monitoring and quality control of x-ray equipment; performs lead apron integrity checks.
  • Implements and manages the personal monitoring program (film and ring badges), arranges for badges for new employees, arranges badge collection from and distribution to existing staff members, and communicates changes and related information to the badge vendor; conducts complete monitoring surveys; conducts routine monitoring and analysis of urine samples from personnel using radionuclides; prepares written reports of radiation exposures.
  • Carries out and supervises the management, collection, chemical treatment, volume reduction, manifesting, segregation, bulking, packaging and transporting, and other related functions for the minimization, treatment, and disposal of radioactive waste; makes arrangements for pick-up by vendor.
  • Assists in risk communication programs about radiological hazards; provides hands-on training to staff on the proper use of radiation monitoring equipment; provides and assists with initial and refresher radiation safety training.
  • Provides instructions to patients undergoing radiopharmaceutical therapy or brachytherapy concerning radiation risks, procedures for reducing exposure to families, and other pertinent radiation safety-related health questions; provides instruction to staff on preparation and decontamination of patient rooms.
  • Under broad management of the Director/Radiation Safety Officer, responds to radiation incidents and emergencies, and supervises emergency procedures and mitigation efforts.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in health physics, or a closely related radiation science field, plus at least three (3) years of experience in a comprehensive health physics/radiation safety program.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in identifying, evaluating, and mitigating radiation hazards essential.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current radiation safety regulations and guidelines.
  • Evidence of relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals is essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond to emergencies and critical situations appropriately in a research setting.
  • Must be able to walk/stand for extended periods of time and provide emergency response services, as needed (including rotating on-call/off-hours services).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, including experience in making presentations in front of small and large groups.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and analytical skills.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP) designation.
  • Familiarity with academic/medical radiation safety program.
