Job Description
The GEAR UP First Year College Advisor’s (FYCA) purpose is to enhance Nevada’s college going culture by increasing the number of low-income students from selected schools who apply, attend and graduate from postsecondary institutions. The GEAR UP FYCA is responsible for building a network of support and collaboration with other GEAR UP FYCAs, SPIFs, parents, teachers, and school district staff to empower students attending targeted schools with information, resources and strategies to achieve the GEAR UP goals. The GEAR UP FYCA will travel throughout GBC’s service area.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree. Prefer two years of related experience in an education or education related setting working with first-generation pre-college students.
Knowledge of:
  • Higher education admission requirements
  • Financial aid and scholarship options for college students
  • Adolescent learning and development
  • K-12 policies for student progression and persistence to graduation
  • Program and event management
  • Budget management
  • Academic advising and student development theory
  • Federal law as related to position, i.e., Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
  • Working with first-generation pre-college students and first-generation college students
Skills:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Interpersonal and human relations skills, specifically interaction with middle-school to high school age children, parents, college students, and education professionals
  • Decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency in use of a personal computer and current software applications including but not limited to Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, and email)
Ability to:
  • Translate student interests into college majors and possible careers
  • Motivate students and parents to prepare for college
  • Be sensitive to disabilities and cultural and ethnic diversity issues
  • Apply established rules and procedures and make decisions that affect quality, accuracy, or effectiveness of results
  • Maintain confidentiality of information
  • Travel and work flexible schedules
  • Work independently with minimal supervision
Responsibilities:
  • Design, implement, and assess programs designed to educate and assist first-generation college students and their families regarding college admission requirements and financial aid planning
  • Serve as the “point person” for college-related inquiries from assigned GEAR UP middle and high schools
  • Coordinate and conduct campus visits for GEAR UP students and their families
  • Coordinate financial literacy workshops for the students and families of their assigned GEAR UP middle and high schools
  • Assist GEAR UP students and their families in the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and college applications at the high schools
  • Coordinate dual credit college/high school program for GEAR UP students
  • Collect data for GEAR UP grant evaluation and reports
  • Document in-kind match for GEAR UP reporting
  • Assist NSHE GEAR UP officials with a broad range of grant implementation activities designed to meet the GEAR UP FYCA Program goals
  • Compile mid-term and final grant reports in collaboration with GBC’s grant writer and NDE’s requirements
  • Train, hire and supervise program students to serve as Mentors
  • Manage FYCA budgets within requirements set by the NDE
  • Provide direct services to students in the areas of academic, career, financial aid and personal counseling
  • Coordinate student activities designed to promote participant persistence and graduation
  • Participate and assist in all NSHE GEAR UP trainings
  • Maintain a regular presence with assigned GEAR UP middle and high schools, including weekly trips to Las Vegas and frequent communication via electronic or other type of media
  • Maintain regular communication with the SPIFs and counselors working at the GEAR UP middle and high schools
  • Coordinate visits and maintain a regular presence with assigned GEAR UP middle and high schools including those in rural target sites
  • Facilitate individual, group, and electronic program to strengthen outreach efforts
Salary/Benefits
This is a part-time non-benefits eligible position. This position will not work more than 79 hours per month. The hourly payrate is $26.55
