The UCSF Department of Medicine is seeking an entry-level Front-End Engineer to join our DOM programming team and to help build and enhance our web-based applications. Our applications have transformed manual processes into portals that automate, streamline, and standardize processes. This role will be responsible for supporting and developing the user interface of DOM applications.

As a Front-End Engineer, you will focus primarily on user interface design and functionality. You will work closely with the DOM programming team to identify user needs and implement interface designs. You will also help update the functionality of existing features and triage issues to improve usability for our users. You should have experience using the jQuery and React libraries, as well as the Bootstrap.js and AngularJS frameworks. Our ideal candidate is a team player who takes pride in their work and wants to make sure our customers are satisfied with their finished product.

The scope for this position includes developing and implementing new UX features, building reusable code for future use, fixing bugs and issues, and collaborating with other team members and stakeholders.

This is a one-year position with the possibility to extend.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Department includes research, teaching, patient care, and public service. The DOM has an annual budget of ~$700M across three sites with ~3,000 employees. The DOM comprises 24% of all UCSF faculty, 29% of the SOM’s faculty, and 19% of the SOM budget. For the past 30 years, the DOM has consistently ranked among the top four departments of medicine in the country, and in the last several years, the department has been the number one recipient of NIH research dollars. The DOM has 17 ACGME and 15 non-ACGME fellowship programs, and its internal medicine residency has consistently been ranked as one of the top programs in the country.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience with one of the following: jQuery, React JavaScript libraries, and/or AngularJS frameworks.
  • Experience with HTML and CSS.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge relating to the design development, modification, and implementation of software.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a shell environment, such as Bash.
  • Experience with Bootstrap.js, AJAX, and blade templates.
  • Experience with Laravel and Git/Github.
  • Experience with workflow-oriented applications.
  • Knowledge of other IT related areas.
  • Demonstrated software repository skills.
  • Experience with common programming tools.
