Job Description: Flow Cytometry Core Manager

The successful candidate will provide flow cytometry laboratory support to the Immuno-science Drug Discovery group within the Immunology and Cardiovascular (ICV) Thematic Research Center (TRC) and to the Translational Medicine group. The candidate should possess the technical knowledge to setup, maintain, and troubleshoot both traditional and full spectrum analyzers and sorters. The candidate should also be knowledgeable with various flow cytometry analytical concepts and familiar with performing the analysis on a variety of analytical applications, such as FlowJo, Cytobank, and/or FCS Express. The candidate must have a deep understanding of flow cytometry concepts, such as panel design and optimization, compensation/spectral unmixing, and cellular sorting. The candidate must be an organized, detail-oriented, and a self-directed individual who can handle a variety of flow cytometry-related tasks in a matrix environment. Interpersonal skills and ability to work efficiently with scientists across teams with various scientific backgrounds and skill levels is key to this role.

Representative responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Flow cytometry support, daily QC, monthly maintenance, vendor service and preventative maintenance scheduling, instrument standardization, database management, and user training on various flow cytometry instruments

  • Candidates must be able to provide hands-on and comprehensive training to team members, as well as engaging in educational mentoring through organizing seminars and presenting to the department about various aspects of flowcytometry

  • Assist researchers in experimental design and execution of flow cytometry experiments

    • Including but not limited to:

      • Panel design and optimization

      • Cell isolation, sample preparation and staining

      • Data Acquisition

      • Cellular Sorting

      • Data analysis and presentation

  • Develop and review flow cytometry laboratory procedures and SOPs for Customer review and approval

  • Maintenance of laboratory stocks of supplies and reagents at Customer’s expense

  • Interface with Unity Lab Services on systems’ contract coverage, preventive maintenance, service calls to minimize system downtime and optimize performance

  • Regular communication with ICV TRC and other team members on the usage, status, and performance of flow cytometry instrumentation

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

    • 5+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Master’s Degree

    • 3+ years of academic and / or industry experience

Or

  • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in the Life Sciences

    • No experience necessary

Preferred Qualifications: (Manager completes this section)

  • Degree & experience: Biology, Immunology, or related field

    • PhD with typically 0-4+ years of pharmaceutical or academic experience

    • Master’s with typically 8+ years of pharmaceutical or typically 10+ years of academic experience

    • Bachelor’s with typically 10-12+ years of pharmaceutical experience

  • Proficient knowledge in flow cytometry and at least 3 years’ experience applying flow cytometry techniques in research, preferably in an industry setting.

  • Experience in operation of multiple flow cytometry platforms (e.g.: BD, Sony, Cytek, etc.) and specialized analysis software (e.g.: FlowJo, FCSExpress, …)

  • Demonstrated experience in training and supervising associates, preferably in an industry setting.

  • Previous experience with flow cytometry, hands-on experience in developing flow cytometry-based methods and functional flow while managing laboratory flow core is preferred.

Must possess excellent organization skills and have a high attention to detail with a desire to get the job completed accurately and in a timely manner. Must be collaborative and a team player, resourceful and take initiative. The position requires strong interpersonal skills and exceptional communication skills (both verbal and written). Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgment to solve problems is essential. Strong analytical and computer skills, including expertise in using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint are required.
