Fisheries Biologist III (Warmwater Hatchery Manager) Job at State of South Carolina
This employee will be responsible for leading, supervising and providing administrative support to hatchery operations at the Dennis Wildlife Center (DWC) and satellite Bayless Hatchery while also managing the production of striped bass and other fish species at both facilities.
Job Duties Include:
- Regulating/supervising all activities which pertain to the culture and harvest of fish at the DWC and Bayless Hatchery.
- Implementing/carrying out all duties necessary to ensure fish production meets annual goals set by Hatchery Coordinator.
- Coordinating manpower and equipment needs to ensure successful broodstock collection, spawning, hatching, pond stocking, management, harvest, transportation and stocking of hatchery products to the state's public waters.
- Supervising the maintenance of facilities, equipment, grounds, and outbuildings assigned to hatchery operations.
- Remaining on-call 24hours/day.
- Planning/implementing research activities at DWC which may improve production or stocking efficiency of designated fish species.
- Pursuing outside funding to support research activities when possible.
- Supervising hatchery staff.
- Coordinating staff to provide assistance to other State hatcheries, regional staff, and research projects when necessary.
- Coordinating outreach activities including organizing fisheries related events, stocking and hauling for DNR partners and meeting with groups to promote SCDNR and the fish hatchery program.
- Administrative tasks such as completing/maintaining: department records, fish production reports, feed usage records, annual report, requisitions, field purchase requests (FPR's), procurement cards, staff sick/annual leave reports, development of hatchery information for public use, etc.
- Maintaining all issued equipment.
A master's degree in biology, chemistry or wildlife management and two (2) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and four (4) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs.
Meet Water Competency Criteria as defined by Water Safety USA. Standard (Core) and Aquatic (Category 5) SC Pesticide Applicator's License within twelve (12) months of hire. Ability to acquire first aid and CPR training.
