Description / Position Overview

Equipment Operator I - Sweeper Operations

In this position you will perform routine street sweeping operations for vehicle and pedestrian safety, to keep our streets clean, and to reduce air and water pollution by preventing trash, sand, salt, and other pollutants from entering and plugging our storm water system.

Essential Job Functions
- the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
  • Operate equipment such as a sweeper, front end loader, backhoe, utility truck with trailer, and tankers
  • Operate a single or tandem axle dump truck with plow and sander; apply chemicals, abrasives, and other ice control products during snow removal operations
  • Transport material and equipment to and from maintenance and construction sites
  • Safely use, clean, service, and make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment and tools
  • Perform manual labor such as sweeping pedestrian ramps and shoveling snow
  • Safely operate hand and power tools equipment such as leaf blowers, trimmers, shovels, rakes, Madvac, and power brooms
  • Perform grounds maintenance and clean up
  • Assist other divisions within the Public Works departments as business needs permit

We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
  • Knowledge of the basic operation and maintenance requirements of power-driven equipment
  • Knowledge of practices, methods, and materials used in general construction
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods

Successful candidates will have

  • A high school diploma or GED
  • One year of full-time experience in related area of assignment
  • Possess, or obtain within one year of hire, and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado CDL Class B driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges

(NOTE: CURRENT CDLs MUST BE REGISTERED WITH THE FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) DRUG AND ALCOHOL CLEARINGHOUSE AT https://clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov.)

One (1) year of the appropriate type and level of experience may be substituted for each required year of post-high school education.

Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirements.

Additional Information

The City of Colorado Springs offers additional compensation depending on the position, area of assignment, and specific job assignments, including shift differential, pay differential, acting or lead, special assignment, hazard pay, longevity, cell phone allowance, uniform allowance, relocation, awards, standby, call out, compensatory time off, tuition, overtime, extra duty, incentive, holiday premium, proficiency, and vacation sell back.

Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to reach, bend, climb, kneel, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; lift, carry, and drag up to 50 pounds occasionally; use fingers, hands, and legs; distinguish colors, and safely operate assigned vehicle and equipment.

You will be required to respond to emergency after-hours callouts.
