The Central Shenandoah Health District (CSHD) is seeking a highly motivated Environmental Health Specialist Sr. (EHS) to join our team of professionals committed to providing support of Public Health services. The Food Program position is based out of the Staunton-Augusta Health Department with some travel throughout CSHD. Major duties include: permitting and conducting inspections of facilities such as restaurants, temporary food vendors, campgrounds, summer camps, hotels, migrant labor camps, and recreational pools. The position also performs rabies investigation and response, assists with foodborne illness and communicable disease investigations, and responds to general environmental complaints. Those candidates not meeting the NEHA Certified Professional of Food Safety (CP-FS) and/or VDH Food Standardization minimum qualification may be considered for an Environmental Health Specialist (entry level) position and must be able to complete training for credentials within 18 months.

Minimum Qualifications
Basic Knowledge of biology and epidemiology; ability to interpret complex federal, state, and local environmental health policies, regulations, and laws; skill in communication, both oral and written ability to deal with the public and resolve conflict in a regulatory setting; ability to prepare thorough documentation and reports or regulatory activities; skill as an educator/trainer teaching environmental health principles.

Ability to interpret and enforce laws and regulations governing environmental health programs; ability to analyze information and make recommendations; to receive, understand and perform tasks as instructed by supervisor; to perform physically demanding tasks.

Must be DPOR licensed onsite soil evaluator, VDH standardized in food to qualify as EH Senior.

A valid State Driver’s License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency.


Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health Sciences or equivalent combination of work experience and education.

Special Requirements
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.

A twelve-month probationary period is required for all new state employees. A new probation period may be required for successful internal candidates.
VDH requires all Health-Care Personnel (HCP) to provide documentation of immunization or evidence of immunity to the following: hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella; a one-time dose of tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap) vaccine regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-diphtheria (Td) vaccine was administered (Td or Tdap boosters shall be received every 10 years); and the current year’s seasonal influenza vaccination.

Local and out of state travel including overnight stay, may be required from time to time to attend conferences, meetings, training, coverage, and professional development. May require some weekend and/or evening hours.
