Reports to: Environmental Programs Coordinator

Job Objective: To assist in organizing and implementing environmental programming. Coordinate and participate in environmental education programs on sites manages by the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center, Inc., specifically in regards to the following tasks:

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Programs Coordinator to create, organize, and implement environmental programming such as guided hikes, speaking engagements, workshops, and other activities.
  • Assist with various administrative tasks including program curricula, quarterly reports, grant/funding proposals, advertisements, and social media posts.
  • Comfortably speaking with the public and park visitors as pertains to directed programs and events.
  • Assist in managing our visitors center which includes;
  • Greeting and educating the public about the center’s exhibits and displays and provide tours of the center for interested groups
  • Managing a gift shop and following CHEC procedures to collect payments and log sales
  • Maintaining a clean and neat appearance of the exhibit and gift shop displays
  • Familiarizing visitors with the park and it’s common flora/fauna
  • Comfortably handling and caring for our animal ambassadors and their enclosures (snakes, turtles, skink, and tortoise) and providing animal encounters while educating guests about the animals.
  • Conduct environmental education programs and work together with other CHEC staff/volunteers to accomplish objectives.
  • Assist in the implementation and/or development of other projects directed by the executive staff, such as: Charlotte County School System field trips, water resource education programs, CHEC volunteer project coordination, summer camps and special events.
  • Asist in the development of future plans for newly contracted sites and projects.
  • Maintain and organize proper files and databases for all of the above.

Qualifications:

  • Must be enthusiastic about educating people of all ages about Florida’s environment and animals and should have a background in each.
  • Should possess excellent customer service skills and be comfortable enthusiastically interacting with the public.
  • Must be comfortable and willing to handle and care for indoor animals (including snakes, lizards, turtles, and tortoises)
  • Must be able to maintain a flexible schedule as assigned- the visitors center hours are typically Monday-Friday from 9 am - 3 pm.
