AES Clean Energy is seeking a Control Solutions Engineer to design novel renewable energy and energy storage control architectures that will be incorporated into projects across the US and internationally, with the goal of increasing the competitiveness, safety, and reliability of our owner-operated commercial, industrial and utility scale generation facilities.
The control solutions engineer is responsible for developing integrated control solutions and implementing them in the field. They will work with the AES project teams, vendors, 3rd parties, and consultants during the development, project design, plant commissioning and operational phases. The control systems integrate several levels of controllers and 3rd party interfaces. Generation facilities include up to the GW scale, behind the meter generating equipment in the MW scale, and stand-alone systems in the large kW scale. Systems may be located all on one site or connected virtually at different sites.
The successful candidate will have a depth of experience in control theory, control of power flows in utilities, power electronics capabilities, SCADA, communications protocols, and software.
The position reports to the team centrally located in Louisville, CO and may include up to 20% travel to project locations and international partner locations. Working remotely is possible.
Key Responsibilities
  • Creating an overall control and communication architecture to meet the needs of a multi-source and multi-function power plant.
  • Researching and innovating control systems with the AES team, vendors, and customers.
  • Leading the development, installation, and verification of control algorithms.
  • Learning the control interfaces, inputs and outputs of new equipment.
  • Training team members for designing, installing, commissioning, and operating first-of-a kind control technologies being implemented into projects.
  • Trouble shooting control and communications issues with new deployments.
Skills and Qualifications
  • The passion to continually improve energy infrastructure, the patience to turn failures into lessons learned, and the perseverance to drive change over a lifetime.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent technical field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Proven history of successful product development and design.
  • 5+ years of control architecture experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in renewable energy; experience with microgrids preferred
  • Proficient in programming languages such a Python or C/C++
  • Proficient with Data Acquisitions systems and Databases
  • Experience with Cyber Security design and testing.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy equipment fundamentals such as solar photovoltaics (PV), batteries, wind turbines, hydroelectric turbines, fuel cells, electrolyzers, thermoelectric generators, and thermal mechanical generators.
  • Proficiency with advanced features of Microsoft software tools and web applications
The expected salary for this position begins at $85,000 (minimum). Factors that may be used to determine final salary offered include relevant experience, skills, location, qualifications and other factors, consistent with applicable law. This position is eligible to receive an annual bonus.
