Job Summary

CU Boulder encourages applications for an Electrician! The purpose of this role is to function as an Electrical Trades Assistant in the Facilities Operations Electric Shop. The primary focus of the position will be bulb replacement, emergency and exit light replacement and testing, replacing light fixture ballasts, maintaining walk and roadway lighting and assisting the Electrical Trades II positions in the Shop.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Assist Journey-Level Electrician

  • Assist journey-level electricians with the installation of electrical system components. Examples include; installing wire ways, installing motors, and assisting in installation of a variable frequency drive (VFD). A VFD is a device that allows for different frequency output to conserve energy.

Lamps & Ballasts

  • Replace lamps and/or ballasts in light fixtures. Determine the type of lamp required including; wattage, pin configuration, and color temperature. When replacing a ballast, determine if the power is off, ballast type, voltage, and lamp configuration.
  • Resolve if the ballast is electrical waste or hazardous waste containing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB). Remove, identify, store, and track all old lamps per United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

Emergency & Exit Lights

  • Test, inspect, repair or replace emergency/exit lights.
  • Based on a preventive maintenance work order for lights, push the test button, the light goes through the test sequence and indicates if the light is operating accurately. If the test fails, replace the failed component. If it cannot be repaired, replace the unit.

Bi-Monthly Stand-By Generator Test

  • Perform a bimonthly generator test on all stand-by generators to ensure generators and associated transfer switches are in good working order in the event of a power outage.

Assist with Medium Voltage Preventive Maintenance Work

  • Assist Electrical Trades II positions to complete preventative maintenance on transformers and medium voltage switches on campus.
  • Preventative maintenance includes infrared tests of transformers and switches and pressure tests on gas components of the switches.

Paperwork, Scheduling, & Other Duties

  • Complete material issuance requests and purchase requests. When closing work orders, include closing comments and ensure any repair work orders are built.
  • As an essential services employee, respond to other duties as assigned on an “as needed” basis; this may also include the alternative work schedules.
  • Drive a University vehicle to carry tools, materials, and to complete work.
  • Follow all safety policies, procedures and guidelines, and adhere to standing operating procedures for assignments and use of equipment. Participate in and complete all safety trainings. Report potential safety hazards, mistakes, accidents and/or procedural violations to the supervisor in a timely manner.

What You Should Know

  • This position is designated as Essential Services. A designation of Essential Services means that the employee is required to report to work at times when the campus is closed due to fire, explosion, inclement weather or other emergency situations.
  • The anticipated work schedule for this in-person position is Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm.
  • This position is eligible for our Facilities Management Employee Referral Program.

The salary range for this position is $46,212 - $51,924 annually.

What We Require

  • Must be a Colorado resident to apply.
  • Must have a valid Colorado driver's license.
  • Two years of increasingly responsible electrical experience in the commercial or industrial electrical construction field as an apprentice or building electrical maintenance worker, or electronic experience appropriate to the work assignment.
  • Satisfactory completion of a formalized electrician apprenticeship or satisfactory completion of electrical or electronic course work at an accredited non-correspondence college, trade or vocational school, or military service may substitute for the experience on a year for year basis.
